My steak was a little tough, it came with dry mashed potatoes and a roasted palano pepper on top with an onion ring on top of that! I wish the pablano was a green chile, yum!
The Margarita was sufficiently strong, which is a big plus in most restaurants, but it was a silver coin special!
My wife’s chicken sandwich was fantastic, surrounded by more fries than we could eat.
Prices were great, considering the location. They don’t take reservations unless you have a party of 6 or more. We arrived at 6:15 and we’re ushered quickly to a table, but as we ate open tables became scarce, plan accordingly!

The San Francisco Street Bar & Grill opened its doors in April of 1985. It was a quiet time in Santa Fe, a depression in the commercial and real estate markets. Downtown had a few lunch spots that closed early and upscale restaurants frequented on special occasions. Where was the place for the common man (or woman) that served continuously through the day and remained open late?
The original restaurant was located at 114 San Francisco Street, below street level. Our success was immediate and continued to boom through the late eighties. Casual atmosphere, full bar, efficient service, and hamburgers, grilled sandwiches, creative salads & soups.
The restaurant moved in 2003 to the current location which has large windows overlooking historic San Francisco St. and Don Gaspar provide abundant natural lighting. The wide open dining room originally designed as an art space, now attractively exhibits paintings and sculptures that illustrate Santa Fe’s position as the third largest art market in the United States. The copper paneled plate-up area and raw copper heat lamps are integral design elements that continue with copper panels at the bar and hand tooled copper chandeliers by Roberto Gallegos over the entrance stairwell.
The San Francisco St. Bar & Grill is a tradition not to be missed.
Craft Cocktails. Local Beer. Good Eats. Great People.
Service was dismal besides the flatness. We had to ask her for water several times, which she proceeded to pour all over the 4 glasses, leaving us to clean it up with our napkins.
“Is that your food?!” my daughter blurted out when it finally arrived. Apparently it had been sitting under the heat lamp for an unsavory amount of time. Lovely.
Let me start out by saying I have never in my life eaten New Mexican food. I was trying to remain authentic and ordered the chicken enchiladas to do so. Big mistake. Flavorless, dry chicken wrapped in fire spice. The beans were runny, flavorless slop. The rice, was there. The melted cheese was the best part. Nice.
The French dip was the fattest cut they had. The bread was old and dry on the corners. The dipping sauce couldn’t save this meal.
The highlight of the entire experience was the dipped fries. I’m not sure if they had dairy or not. I didn’t feel like we were allowed to ask.
We encountered a couple on the street who were considering going into the restaurant upon us leaving. We told them about our experience. Apparently flavorless fire is the New Mexico signature?! Should have gone to La Fonda. At least it’s a classic.
San Francisco Street Bar & Grill was closed to the public Thanksgiving Day 2025 but they did offer a complete Thanksgiving meal for pick up ( see attached photo of offering ). Reserving the meal over the telephone was simple.
The order was fulfilled as promised and was very delicious. The turkey cooked to perfection and the stuffing was truly amazing. While those were my favorites all food was extremely wonderful and thoughtfully packaged to go with ease. The included pumpkin pie was from ‘Chocolate Maven’. Loading Zone right on Don Gaspar by front door on corner of San Francisco St and Don Gaspar.
I hadn’t been to San Francisco Street Bar & Grill since it relocated once again near it’s original location downtown. The food was delivered hot. As I waited for chef, owner, and staff to pack up the order – I had a nice look around. The entire restaurant was immaculate and decorated for the holiday season. The bar was organized and very clean. They had placards about describing services for Christmas parties and holiday reservations. Art displayed on the walls available for sale and tastefully done.
I know a first class operation when I see one. San Francisco Street Bar & Grill is first class all around.
I want Thanksgiving dinner from San Francisco Street Bar & Grill to be a new tradition. I hope they continue to offer this service.
What a BREEZE!
(ps – after serving and sitting on stove top for nine hours, turkey was just as juicy and moist as as it was when entering the home! SO GOOD! )
THANK YOU SAN FRANCISCO STREET BAR & GRILL.
