Oushou is such a great Japanese restaurant in Brunswick. The tasting menu is the perfect way to start if you want to try a bit of everything, and it also comes with an additional side; I chose the tempura which was delicious and cooked really well.

The wagyu beef skewers were a standout, so flavourful and cooked just right. The mains were also super filling and full of flavour. I ordered the truffle beef fried rice and the teriyaki salmon, and both were excellent.

Dessert was the highlight for me: the matcha creme brulee with matcha ice cream So rich, creamy and genuinely elite.

The only downside was the service was a little slow… they only had two waitstaff and it was quite busy (especially for a Monday, so they probably didn’t expect the crowd). Overall though, the food was so good and I’d definitely come back again.

We had an exceptional dining experience at Oushou. From the moment the food arrived, it was clear this is a venue that takes pride in both presentation and flavour.

The sashimi was beautifully fresh and expertly sliced and flavourful. The prawns were perfect and the scallops delicately seared and finished with just enough sauce to enhance rather than overpower. The meat and rice dishes brought it all home.

What really elevates Oushou is the way the dishes are presented. The tasting platters feel abundant without being overwhelming, inviting you to slow down and enjoy each piece. The visual care mirrors the quality of the ingredients, making the meal feel considered and special. And the atmosphere and decor perfectly match the dishes. We’re already planning our next visit. Highly recommend.

Love a tasting menu!

Came here specifically for the tasting menu and it did not disappoint! We loved the presentation, and they were happy to swap an item (not a fan of oysters).

The main was on the small side but for 59pp it was decent enough.

@oushou_japanese is a Japanese restaurant with five locations across Melbourne – South Yarra, Hawthorn East, Brighton, Knox and their newest in Brunswick East on Lygon St (taking over the former Bluebonnet space).

Surprisingly, I’d never heard of them before but decided to check out the new Brunswick East venue with no real expectations. The menu is fairly classic and simple but a few things caught my eye straight away – particularly the $54 Oushou Tasting Menu and the Sushi Tacos.

We started with drinks – @SeasaltYuzushu is so refreshing and easily one of my favourites so i’ll never pass on that and they also have their own Oushou Lager on tap, which my bf really enjoyed!

⭐️ Oushou Tasting Menu – This arrived as a generous 9 square bento box with scallop cocktail, oyster, agedashi tofu, nigiri (seared salmon, tuna, kingfish, tiger prawn) and tataki (gyu, tuna, salmon, kingfish). You also get a choice of main – we went with the Salmon Saikoyaki, which was perfectly cooked and well marinated and the Eye Fillet Steak, which was extremely tender. We could have stopped here, it was more than satisfying. I would have easily eaten a whole plate of the torched salmon nigiri alone.
✔️ Sushi Tacos – We tried both the salmon and tuna. The fish was super fresh, they could’ve used a bit more flavour but nothing some soy can’t fix.
⭐️ Oushou Roll (tuna, salmon, scallop, kingfish, cucumber, avocado) – These are huge. The value here is incredible, and they were really enjoyable. It was listed as 6 pieces but came out as 8.
⭐️ Prawn Toast – One of the best prawn toasts I’ve had! Extra crisp, packed with juicy prawn and served with a dipping sauce.

After just coming back from a month in Japan, I was a little worried it wouldn’t compare but I’m really glad I visited. The seafood quality was excellent, everything was fresh, well priced and not overcomplicated. It’s a casual spot, and definitely somewhere I’ll be craving again!

They’re also open for takeaway.

Excellent first experience here. Staff are highly attentive providing fast service within and ambient atmosphere. The appetizers were as expected light and fresh and the mains were filling and flavoursome. We won’t visit again anytime soon as no meal was a big standout, just overall very good.

Newly opened Japanese restaurant (less than two weeks). The interior has been updated from the previous restaurant and seems to aim for a classy look, but it doesn’t quite come together yet.

Service was okay but inconsistent; staff seemed new, unsure, and not very attentive. We had the $54 tasting menu, plus some beer and sake. The first course was nicely presented and tasty, but the main (Salmon Tataki), while delicious, was quite small. We ordered an Oushou Roll to fill up, but after a long wait and seeing other tables served, we were told the order hadn’t been put through and cancelled it.

Nice to have a new Japanese restaurant in the area, but service needs improvement. Might return with friends once they’re more settled and trained.

The food was incredibly fresh, beautifully presented, and full of authentic Japanese flavours. Every dish — from the sashimi to the hot dishes — was made with great attention to detail. The staff were warm, attentive, and made me feel genuinely welcomed. The ambiance was cosy and elegant, perfect for both casual meals and special occasions.

I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves quality Japanese cuisine. I’ll definitely be coming back!

The deluxe sushi sashimi platter was very fresh and absolutely delicious. It paired beautifully with our yummy mocktails.
The venue is beautifully set up, classy, sophisticated, yet comfortable. The staff were very kind and professional. Next time we look forward to bringing our friends and trying the tasting menu. So lucky to have this new local gem.
