Sometimes, all you want is a bite of home — the kind that tastes like Japan even when you’re miles away. Ocean Sushi Deli delivers exactly that. From authentic onigiri to miso soup, and bento boxes that feel like a full-on culinary hug, this place had us hooked the moment we walked in.

The lunch specials are not to be missed — it’s the kind of deal that makes you forget about your afternoon meetings and just focus on the joy of good food. So good, in fact, we ended up going twice in one week. Yes, it was that irresistible.

The staff is genuinely friendly, attentive, and welcoming, making you feel like a regular even on your first visit. Fair warning: lunch hour is busy, but that’s just proof that this little gem is doing something right.

If you’ve been craving a taste of Japan, this is your spot — cozy, authentic, and utterly satisfying.

Nice Japanese restaurant in Monterey and food was good after a walk around the Pacific Grove and Aquarium area. The hot tea was great since it was a cold winter day. We will be back.

I can deal with the absolute lack of ambience, but the food….yikes. This sushi makes the gas station variety seem like haut cuisine. My salmon skin roll featured salmon straight out of a can. Seriously? I’m not even sure it was salmon. It tasted like Chicken of the Sea.

A large, very Japanese menu, not limited to sushi but including things not often seen, like shioyaki saba and an extraordinary eel bowl. Small, with a very family-owned feel. Extremely friendly people, very kind and generous. Popular, so you have to navigate it possibly being quite full, but absolutely worth the effort. I’m not a big fan of how, these days, you gotta drop $100 to get a full dinner for four, but this place is DEFINITELY the place to do that.

Avoid ordering ramen to go – container half filled with 2 pieces of meat, 1 small bok choy, some noodles and greyish soup and not much else. Super disappointing and not consistent with the pics of other dishes!

This is one of my favorite places to go for California rolls But when I got here yesterday, they had a salmon lunch special that I couldn’t resist. Everything was made to perfection. My other go to secret dish that I love here is their red snapper dinner plate and so affordable. I highly recommend this restaurant and my other tip is to call ahead when you can.

We went to Tokyo last winter and this shop reminded us of many mornings we spent at Tsukiji Fish Market. The shop is very casual which contribute to homie feeling and affordable price.
The shopkeepers are so friendly and make sure we got what we needed!
Since I could hardly find any Ikura in OK. I got like 5 Ikura nikiri sushi and I was just in heaven! Very fresh and tasted amazing!
Thank you for taking care of us.

Got the Saturday special. Fish was fresh. Soup and salad was nice. Staff very nice and friendly. Pleasant experience…except my wife got mad at me and wouldn’t talk or help me eat the food. You’re asking why that would change the experience? Oh, you are terrible!

Servers were very kind. (人 •͈ᴗ•͈)

If the menu was condensed they’d do better financially; service time would be quicker, customer turn around would be higher, and items could be more affordable thus creating an incentive for greater orders and higher spending from customers would occur more frequently. Having a current menu posted online would also have a positive impact on the “call-in orders preferred”. (┛◉Д◉)┛彡┻━┻

Service time was too long; it was less busy than usual, but I had to wait 45 minutes for my meal. ┐( ˘_˘)┌

The rice-to-fish ratio is not good and the rice was overcooked. I heard customers who walked past me, leaving the store, say the “food was so disgusting”. I don’t think it was that bad, but I’ve had better. I felt the menu items were overpriced given the quality, location, and the fact that you could get better quality all-you-can-eat sushi elsewhere for the price of two rolls from Ocean Sushi Deli.

What a find. So glad we made the effort after the aquarium (amazing) to make the short drive up to here.
It’s nothing to look at inside, just a few wonky tables and chairs. But the huge menu, the freshness of the fish and the charm of the staff will win you over.
If I worked in downtown Monterey, I’d be here every week.
