In our view, the Japanese food was preferable to the Chinese. The mango chicken was a bit too oil and way too sweet. The sushi and miso soup, on the other hand, were excellent, almost like being back in Japan again.
The service was friendly if a bit clumsy despite the robotic table server. Prices were surprisingly reasonable.
Most impressive was how they took a former Bob Evans, kept the old furnishings and layout while transforming the decor into a mostly Chinese, slightly Japanese atmosphere. You could see traces of the old “down on the farm” restaurant and yet everything harmonized with the Asian theme.
Pro Tip
Thanks to construction on Washington Street, finding the entrance is a bit of a challenge. Turn south onto Old Trail Road and you will find the entrance to the parking lot (unmarked) on your left. The food makes it well worth the search.
We visited on a Saturday afternoon and were pleased to find their lunch prices also applied on weekends. The entree prices were reasonable, and we both ordered combo meals. I had the Tian Fu Chicken combo lunch, which included a small egg drop soup, a crab rangoon, a spring roll, and a side of fried or steamed rice. My boyfriend chose the Kung Pao Chicken combo.
Unfortunately, the Tian Fu Chicken was a bit underwhelming. The flavor was mainly salty, and the sauce was like a thin gravy. The chicken seemed boiled rather than sautéed or grilled. I wouldn’t order it again. On the other hand, my boyfriend’s Kung Pao Chicken was much better, with the right level of spice. The portion sizes for lunch were generous, and we had leftovers to take home, which we appreciated.
The egg drop soup was not what I expected. It was almost white, with chopped celery and tomatoes, which threw me off. I didn’t like it and wouldn’t order it again. My boyfriend, however, enjoyed his sweet and sour soup, calling it one of the best he’s had. The iced tea was really good.
The service, however, was average. Our waitress seemed disinterested, had an earbud in while serving us, and was distracted by her phone. She had to pause her music to answer my question, and she took a while to give us the check because she was looking at her phone behind the counter.
Overall, Tian Fu was a mixed experience. Some dishes were enjoyable, but others fell short. The lunch prices are reasonable, but I might not rush back.
