First, the front staff was extremely inattentive. Instead of assisting customers, they were gossiping behind the counter and paying little to no attention to me or others waiting. It took an unusually long time for someone to even offer a menu (especially since the TV screens only show limited options). After finally receiving a menu, I waited several more minutes before anyone asked if I was ready to order or had questions.
Second—and most concerning—was the hygiene behind the counter. Staff members were constantly on their phones, touching their hair and ears, and snacking on fruit that is used for smoothies, along with other food. At one point, I ordered a Flan de Coco. One of the employees took it out of the fridge and added coconut flakes, but while doing so, she had a strong coughing fit and coughed openly over the flan without turning away or covering her mouth. This was, by far, one of the worst food-handling practices I have ever witnessed.
The staff overall came across as unprofessional and rude, which is why I didn’t even bother asking for a refund for the smoothie or flan—I simply threw them away. I did keep the food that came from the kitchen, as that appeared to be handled separately.
Additionally, utensils used for making smoothies and other items outside the kitchen were left lying directly on countertops alongside non-food items such as phones and loose change, sometimes even touching them.
While the food itself may be good, the level of service and the lack of basic hygiene are extremely concerning and need immediate attention.
First start off with I am Puerto Rican and white, look very white, but understand Spanish fluently. I don’t speak much of it because of a speak impediment. I walked into pio pio while waiting for laundry down the block, to grab some breakfast. Upon walking in I was looked at like I had two heads. This area is very Hispanic, and I recently moved there in June so I was still exploring the area. I had on a tan hat with bear ears, it was freezing outside and it keeps me warm. Upon walking in the people behind the counter start laughing. I order in English, because as I stated I have a speak impediment and don’t feel comfortable speaking in Spanish, especially to those I do not know, I however do understand. I try and order a bacon egg and cheese, I get looked at like I have two heads. The Girl asks another lady to get my order, and then looks at her coworker, a tall Boy with black curly hair and I say Boy not Man because he did not act like a man, and I say Girl and not Lady because she acted very immature and mean girl like. They were outright laughing at me. I felt very uncomfortable and judged. They assumed I couldn’t understand what they were saying because I didn’t speak Spanish. They were wrong. Now I always tip, I did not tip this time. There was no reason to. They gave me no service and just took my order, watched me the whole time I was waiting and were talking about me right behind my back because they thought I couldn’t understand. I’m used to the prejudice when being around Spanish people and they assuming I don’t understand, however I never gets easier and the blatant disrespect was insane. I grew up with my Puerto Rican grandmother and that was all I knew for a very long time. The judging a book by its cover things is ridiculous and people making others feel bad because of their prejudice is downright unprofessional. I will probably go back again, wearing the same hat and I hope that those people see this and act better. We are all humans we are all the same inside, there is no reason for ANYONE to act like that as an adult. You’re not children, be better.
