My bbq pulled pork was very dry, almost like it sat under a lamp or something. My wife got the brisket, and it was so tough that she had to use a knife. I took a bite of it, and it was not good. I will say the salad was good. We’ve been here before, and it’s always been good, so I don’t know why the meats were so bad that day. I hope it’s better next time.

The Wooden Tie Café – A Small-Town Treasure with Big-Hearted Flavor
On our way home from a law enforcement conference in Kansas City, we took a detour that turned into one of the tastiest highlights of our trip. Nestled in the tiny town of Pierron, Illinois—home to just around 250 residents—The Wooden Tie Café is a country gem that blends small-town hospitality with surprisingly big town menu flavor.
Housed in a beautifully restored early 1900s home, the café still embraces its original layout. Each room tells a story—dark wood built-ins, stained glass windows, original cabinets, and vintage charm are everywhere you look. It’s not a themed imitation of “home-cooked.” It is home—carefully preserved and lovingly served.
We had the pleasure of speaking directly with the owner, a local teacher whose love for both her community is evident in every detail—from the thoughtfully curated menu to the careful restoration of the house itself. She shared how she and her husband, both educators, invested in Pierron to create not just a restaurant, but a gathering place where neighbors and travelers alike could slow down and connect over great food.
We ordered the Smoked Chicken Salad Sandwich and a Classic Burger, each paired with homemade potato chips.
• Smoked Chicken Salad: Perfectly balanced with smoky depth, sweet grapes, crunchy pecans, and a creamy dressing that didn’t overpower. Served on toasted wheatberry bread, it was hearty, fresh, and elevated far beyond what you’d expect in a roadside café.
• The Burger: Cooked just right, juicy and flavorful, nestled in a fresh bun with all the classic toppings. Paired with their signature house-made chips, crisp and seasoned to perfection—honestly addictive.
Located just minutes off the highway, this place is well worth the stop. And when you support this café, you’re investing in a family, a town, and a vision for what community hospitality can be.
If you’re craving an experience that combines authentic warmth, good-quality food, and heartfelt service, put The Wooden Tie Café on your map. Meet the owners, taste their story, and leave encouraged—not just by the flavors, but by the faith and commitment behind every plate.
Highly recommended. We hope we travel this way again so we can stop by!

I usually enjoy the food at this restaurant, but I’m very disappointed in my turkey tie sandwich I got last night. This sandwich says it has bacon and turkey on it among other things. But I barely got one piece of bacon on this sandwich and it was mostly fat. I will definitely try this restaurant again, but if I get food like this again I will not be back.

We did a search for BBQ near where we live, and this location popped up. Located in a small town, it proudly shares that atmosphere. We could tell it was a popular place to eat with all the people there.
The waitresses were on their feet the whole time.
We did have to wait a while for our food. But we were delighted with our choices when they arrived. They also have a great selection of sauces with an Alabama white that was new to us. The ‘Fit to be Tied’ platter had enough meat for two people with leftovers for one more meal. The BBQ was good, but a little dry (the sauces helped).
Overall, great place to go!

Very unique environment. Staff were friendly and accommodating to a large group. Food was fabulous! Prices were reasonable, with very large portions. Set in an old home, the bedrooms are now individual eating areas with large tables, stained glass windows, gorgeous! Well worth the drive out!!!

A local recommended this place so we went there for lunch. My wife had a taco plate and I had the brisket plate with sides of home made chips, and baked beans. Both dishes were delicious and the portions were plenty. The waitress was very nice and helpful. We would definitely eat here again when we make a trip to the area again.

A restaurant in a re-done house in a small town. It was busy and the reason why is the food. I had the Brisket plate and it was good brisket. Oh, the Bread Pudding desert was fabulous

Visited the Wooden Tie on a Saturday evening (2/22) and it was our first time visiting. While walking to the entrance the smokers were running and you could smell the smoke and it smelled so good, which I love the smell of smokers in action. The owners took and converted an old home into a restaurant. There was a good crowd there, we had to wait no more than 10 minutes before being seated. We were seated upstairs in one of the rooms of the house. Our waitress was friendly and got our drinks, she presented one special which was a smoked pork loin wrapped in smoked pork belly, plus 2 side items. My spouse ordered the brisket and two side items. For an appetizer we selected the homemade pork skins, they were really good, fresh and warm and seasoned well. Our dinner entrees arrived and they tasted just as good as they looked. My pork loin wrapped in pork belly had a nice smoke ring and the belly had a nice crispy skin. The pork loin was tender and flavorful, they brought a basket of sauces to put on the meat, I tried a couple of the different sauces – their Carolina golden sauce (mustard based) and their “Tie” Asian sauce were both really good. The side items I selected were the vegetable medley and pork and beans. The vegetable medley was a mix of carrots, broccoli and cauliflower, that was lightly charred on a grill and seasoned. The pork and beans were a mix of kidney, navy and pinto beans and the they used shredded pork in the sauce. Everything was hand made and really delicious. My spouse’s brisket was really good and full of smoke flavor. She selected mac & cheese and pickled beets. The Mac & cheese was homemade and not something that came from a box mix.
The bottom line for this review is we will definitely go back and visit again. The food was great, the service was friendly, but they did seem a bit unorganized when it came to seating us. I would like to try their ribs on my next visit.

Not far from Highland Illinois, in the hamlet of Pierron, is an establishment worthy of your visit. The intoxicating aroma of wood smoke calls you to sit down and satisfy your desire for good barbecue. My family was pleased with our choices and I daresay items we did not choose would be just as delicious.
