Open all day, Salt transforms from a bright and welcoming breakfast spot to a sleek and elegant fine dining destination over the course of the day. Take a seat at the bar to watch our chefs make fresh flatbreads in the live-fire oven, nestle into a banquette under the rotunda, or finish your evening with a cocktail in the lounge, complete with live piano music.

I went here for my birthday breakfast as the guest of my friend. It wasn’t very busy, so they were able to accommodate us with a table by the window. Very nice. Our server couldn’t have been warmer. The avocado toast with salmon and the Benedict with salmon were both excellent. The coffee was very high quality. They surprised me with a surprise birthday gift of a blueberry muffin with a candle. They don’t take reservations, so they scrambled to make my birthday breakfast very pleasant and memorable. Will return.

Fine dining experience with attentive, friendly and efficient service by such a nice young server Ethan. Atmosphere nice but no views even when light. We are experienced drinkers and ordered four cocktails that frankly were average at best and overpriced ($16 to $25). They were either watered down with too much ice, underwhelming, or had a strange taste. The Manhattan especially had a weird flavor, perhaps too much vermouth that overpowered the whiskey. The Black Bass and Halibut were fresh tasting and delicately delicious with interesting sauces that did not overpower. The black garlic polenta was inspired. The food was good but somehow missing the “wow” factor. The chocolate mouse dessert was also very good with a nice combination of flavors and textures, including flavored popcorn and vanilla ice cream. Tasty but far from innovative. Spending over $250 for 2 people, I felt it just wasn’t enough. Additionally, they acknowledged our birthday celebration, but nothing was offered, which frankly was surprising. I think perhaps this was first time in 25 years that an alleged upscale restaurant did not provide us some gesture for our birthday or anniversary celebration, such as a comp dessert or even an aperitif. We eat out 3 times minimally a week, including very fine dining (Michelin) numerous times a year. We’ll return this summer to try their seasonal restaurant, but we will rather stick to a couple of our favorite actual FINE dining establishment in downtown Portsmouth & Boston. Again, good food & service, just not there yet.

For our 43rd Anniversary (it’s today the 28th but we celebrated last night), we visited Salt at The Wentworth for THE FIRST TIME! We usually do the holiday celebrations there but have not eaten dinner.
First call out, because she made the evening SO lovely, is to our server Julia! Seriously, if you make a reservation, request her – I cannot say enough positive things about Julia.
We went at 5:30 with reservations (you need them) by 6:30 it was packed.
As for our meals, WOW. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves with just a couple of comments.
Lobster Bisque – if I was alone, I would have LICKED THE BOWL.
Lobster Fettuccine – first photo is pretty, started eating/stirring and then found this MASSIVE claw on the bottom – there was already A LOT of lobster meat and when I found the claw I thought – bummer, it’s really big and will be tough – IT WAS NOT, and it was delicious.
Mushroom Bucatini – this is the dish to get if you love mushrooms, it was so creamy and delicious!
Pasta for each dish was fresh and cooked perfectly.
I RARELY order dessert – just share whatever Jim gets but I ordered my own.
Jim got the Alaskan Campfire – it had a massive marshmallow toasted on top, amazing ice cream, hot fudge, and flourless chocolate cake!
I got the Not Quite a Brownie Sundae – just WOW. The cannoli ice cream was CRAZY GOOD. Cherry compote was PERFECT.
Price: $$$ – $$$$ but honestly, for a celebration it was worth every penny. We will definitely go back.

It was our first time at Salt and it was great! We started with the focaccia, then had the salmon and steak bowl for dinner, and had the smores and butter cake sundae for dessert. The food was great and the desserts were very creative. The service was really stellar. Our sever Julia was lovely and she checked in on us an appropriate amount. The manager also stopped by which was kind. They were very busy and still took their time with us. The atmosphere is nice with big windows to look out at the sunset. I would definitely come back!

The atmosphere is incredible, such a beautiful space, and the service is great, but the food is only okay. We had a great time for sure, but it’s just not that memorable. Our favorite dish was the goat cheese appetizer – melted goat cheese with crusty bread, so good! Our pasta dishes were good but low on meat and just so rich, we were stuffed but it looked like we had barely made a dent.

We stopped-in for a pre-lunch before lunch & could not have been happier: Prime bar seating, chatted w Ex Chef Lee Michael and his protege’ Emy; Super friendly and talented. Sarah Beth (*?) took carte of our order and was quick on the draw with ice tea and super-friendly service. Also: Chowder was absolutely delicious.

Wentworth-by-the-Sea’s Salt Kitchen + Bar in New Castle, New Hampshire, offers an exceptional dining experience with contemporary American fare in a stylish lounge and an elegant dining room setting. Our evening began in the lounge with their signature Manhattan, paired perfectly with fire-roasted meatballs that were savory and satisfying. The next morning, breakfast continued to impress with a fresh fruit plate parfait featuring house-made granola, seasonal berries, creamy vanilla yogurt, and local honey. The highlight, however, was the Lobster Benedict, a decadent dish of poached eggs, tender Maine lobster, spinach, oven-roasted tomato, and basil citrus hollandaise atop a toasted English muffin. For anyone visiting the Portsmouth/New Castle area, Salt Kitchen + Bar is a must-visit for refined flavors and a memorable dining experience.

This place had an incredible ambiance! The hotel looked like the setting of a modern-day day Dirty Dancing. The aroma upon entering was delightful.
The restaurant served incredible food. Appetizers, entrees, desserts, wow. Incredible experience, highly recommend!

My friends and I dined at Salt around a large dining table with a lazy Susan making it easy to share apps. James was our waiter for dinner and he was a lot of fun. The staff was just so congenial. We really loved it.

We’ve been here many times and I’m only now compelled to give a review, thinking the previous visits were a fluke. This past year, we visited in May 2025, July 2025, and this past weekend, frequenting Salt for breakfast and dinner. The breakfast was delicious each day (other than my over easy eggs coming with clear, runny whites (I expected the yokes, but not a good part of the white, has happened before too). The dinners though, terribly overpriced for what they were. We were a large party in July for dinner and the wait was insanely long and the food was just bad, dry crab crakes, a grease laden soggy Margherita pizza for my 12 year old, dry and overcooked salmon along with another overcooked steak. This past weekend they were out of four dishes. You’re paying for the atmosphere here, oh and the hostess is the shining star of the restaurant, she’s basically the saving grace of the place. Their menu needs a refresh, they need to be more allergy aware and they need a decent chef for dinner (and this was a Saturday night – prime time). The ambiance and convenience are the reasons we’ve given this place so many chances. Another note, no Sunday brunch during winter months…
