The worst sandwich in slo?
I’ll admit Gus’s has never been my favorite sandwich but this visit was just depressing. No straws, out of lots of bread, empty cold cases and shelves. Even if I overlook all of that it was the saddest sandwich I have ever had. Subway makes a better looking sub. The whole place just seems so dirty and not kept up. Even my toddler was going around pointing out everything “old and broken” it’s pretty bad when a kid is noticing how run down it is. I should have grabbed a photo of the food prep area. After a few bites I honestly didn’t feel comfortable with any of us consuming the food and we tossed the remainder. We will be sticking with shops that slice their meat in house, clean and just take better care in general.
Editing to add they were shut down for the day around this time for absent infestation and unsanitary conditions. Clearly I was right to toss the food and not let my kids consume.

Sandwiches are of solid quality, but the flavor combinations are of course subjective. Woman at the register can be snippy. Sandwich makers are uniformly friendly. Good selection of beers in the case, but a lack of pricing labels. Outside seating area is nice, and parking’s not generally difficult, especially if you can use the 15 min zone in front for take out orders.
There are a lot of similar sandwich shops in SLO. Good idea to compare this with High St. Deli to see which matches you the best.

This place needs to be cleaned. It’s is always dirty! Definitely not up to standard. It’s bad when you see the employees making the sandwiches scratching their heads, no damn gloves are being worn ( which might be worse if they did wear them because they wouldn’t be swapped out) they continued on to make the food. Disgusting!! We had to call them out on it and get our Sandos remade.
Sick of them being out of items. Never have bacon for my sando, out of ice, this that and the other. This is the 3rd time we have been here and it is ONLY because it is on SLO EATS APP for buy 1 get one free. This is definitely our last time coming here. There are so many questionable health standards about this place. Even the clothing being worn by the staff , dirty and messy like they wipe their hands on their clothes while making food. Wild!

I usually have a solid experience here. Have had bad veggies in my sandwich in the past but today I got grounded up old turkey in my sandwich. I’m sad and quite disgusted. It looks like old turkey that was sitting in liquid for a long time just completely deteriorated. Like mush. I’ll have to let this place go. I only took one bite. 🙁

I usually order in online and pickup food here
Excellent veggie breakfast burrito. The perfect size and has the right ratio of everything
Parking is on the street and usually there are a few spots available even when it’s busy
Seating is outside so not ideal for a rainy or cold day but really nice on a sunny day

A small well put together sandwich shop. The service is a-bit too casual for a business and I have been twice interrupted by an employee yelling across the room. Not a deal breaker but worth mentioning.
Sandwiches are great, and they will help customize it to your liking quite nicely.
Sitting down outside gives you some good people watching abilities.
All in all a solid choice in the railroad district.

I wish this was an actual local grocery store with longer hours.

Update: good veggie sandwich, uncomfortable ordering experience, could be layed out a bit more efficiently and organized. Pricey for what you get ($14 with chips)

Very cool out of the way place of the hustle and bustle in San Luis Obispo. Old Town Cafe in a nice area. Outside dining. Staff is very friendly. I got to order something off the menu that was not on the menu so I was very happy about that and happy they suggested it thank you the sandwiches were way bigger than I thought they would be! Also a plus. I ordered a gluten-free tuna sandwich. Was very glad they had gluten-free bread. My friend ordered a ham and cheese sandwich and he loved it

I’m born and raised in SLO. Gus’s is in the top 2 best sandwich shops for me. A true deli with phenomenal specialty sandwiches and options to build your own. I’ve been coming here since I was a kid when it was a convenient store. They also have a great beer and chip selection.

Can someone clue me in on what has happened to this place in recent months? Change in management? Bad management? They just stopped caring at all? A friend of mine got me into this place earlier this year; it was a favorite of hers for decades since she was a student at Cal Poly. The first time we went it was good and the food was good too, but every time we’ve gone since then, things have just been falling apart at the seams worse and worse with each visit. First, the salad bar went out of service and never came back (was it ever IN service, even?). Then, the fridges broke. I swear it has been a least a month and a half and they are *still* broken. How can you even call yourself a grocery store with no fridges?? That’s also when they started running out of ingredients – no tuna salad, no peppers, just like very basic important ingredients for their sandwiches are out. And the attitude at the place is just like, shrug, welp, sorry we’re out of that one. OH and literally the chips we got there last time were even stale, it’s just so so bizarre. The wheels are falling off quickly and no one is bothering to even try to pick them up. I’m baffled and at this rate I don’t know how they can possibly still be in business by the time 2025 rolls around. Anyone have any scoop on what is going on here?
