Edit : update after the response from the restaurant-

Thank you for the response.

I understand that recipes vary by region and household, and I respect that taste is subjective. However, my comment was not about flavour preference. It was about the strong orange staining on my fingers, which remained even after multiple washes.

Having cooked with Kashmiri chilli and tomato-based gravies at home for years, I have not experienced this kind of staining from natural ingredients alone. I shared this observation based on my direct experience with the dish.

I appreciate your clarification and will leave it at that for other diners to decide for themselves.

First review :

I ordered butter chicken with garlic naan, expecting at least a basic level of authenticity. What I received was extremely disappointing.

The butter chicken had tiny, barely-there pieces of chicken floating in a huge amount of thick gravy — or more accurately, a bright orange, heavily coloured sauce. The chicken felt like an afterthought.

I ate with my hand (as butter chicken and naan are commonly eaten), and my fingers turned bright orange. I’m attaching photos as prof – This is after washing twice with soap and warm water.

The taste was not authentic at all. It felt overly processed, as if made using ready-made pastes, excessive colouring, and preservatives, rather than fresh ingredients and real spices.
I know this because I make butter chicken at home, and this tasted nothing like the real thing.

I’m also sharing the receipt to show that I genuinely ate here — though calling this a “meal” might be generous. It felt more like something made to fill the stomach, not something to enjoy.

Very disappointing experience. I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for real Indian food.

Best curry in Dunedin! We come here once a month and it incredibly consistent with a large variety of options to suit everyone, all at a fair price. Highly recommend.

We eat a lot of Indian food and have been to many restaurants and this might very well be the best I’ve found. The samosas were so light and flakey and full of flavor. Even the plain naan was flavorful. I really enjoyed the palak paneer.

The food is absolutely delicious, and the staff are very kind and friendly. I come to this restaurant most of the time because of the tasty food and the warm, welcoming service. I always enjoy my experience here and highly recommend it!

Usually this place is buzzing with students and can get quite busy, but during the holidays it was quiet, which made for a relaxed visit. The vibe is casual and welcoming, good for groups or a quick meal. Food came out quickly, staff were polite and direct, and portions were generous. Flavours were excellent with a nice hit of heat that I really enjoyed.

We used to LOVE food from Taste of Tandoor, but the last couple of times have been disappointing. Tonight we ordered three mains and each one was 80% sauce and had about four tiny pieces of meat. I appreciate that cost of ingredients has increased but our experience was definitely underwhelming. We’ll try another Indian restaurant next time.

After 11 days of travelling through New Zealand with my group, we were craving authentic Indian flavours and Taste of Tandoor in Dunedin was the perfect choice. The food was fresh, flavourful, and truly delicious.

The service was excellent as well — warm, attentive, and exceptionally efficient. The team made sure our entire group felt welcomed and well taken care of.

Highly recommended for anyone visiting Dunedin and looking for great Indian food and a wonderful dining experience!

Very welcoming service on arrival, drinks came quickly after ordering followed by entrees. We ordered aloo pakora, tandoori sampler platter, butter chicken, butter paneer masala with cheese & garlic Naan. this was the best Indian cuisine we have ever tasted! So full of flavour and made with love! Everything was perfect! I’m from Auckland, and dinner tonight easily was far superior to anything I have tasted in Auckland! The cheese garlic Naan was fantastic!! We wish we had room for 5 more.
We also got a mango lassi, tasted delicious.
Thank you for a great dinner.

Call this butter chicken? 3 small pieces is ridiculous, my partner got Tika chicken, and got 4, other than that, just a container of sauce. Go elsewhere.
