First time at Eng’s Chinese Restaurant in Kingston… and wow, what a gem. ✨

That neon sign has been calling our name for years, and we finally answered. Owned by Tom and Faye Sit since 1978 (and originally founded in 1927!), Eng’s holds the title of Kingston’s first Chinese restaurant — and was just honored with the James Beard America’s Classics Award for its incredible, multi-generational legacy. You can feel that history the moment you walk in.

Stepping through the door is like a cozy time warp back to the 1970s — wood paneling, low-pile red carpet, and a dining room buzzing with regulars. We had 12 people ahead of us and not a single complaint — that’s how you know it’s good. The hostess was such a delight and completely set the tone. Our waitress delivered everything with a smile (and even a song!). Pure charm.

Now the food:
Egg rolls – Crunchy, flavorful, slightly saltier than usual (in the best way), made with celery instead of cabbage. Addictive.
Pork Yat Gaw Mein (“hangover soup”) – A rich, sultry chicken broth with green onions, long noodles with just the right chew, and tender slices of red pork. It looks simple, but it’s deeply flavorful and comforting.
Double Wonder (General Tso’s Chicken + Orange Beef) – Both listed as “spicy” (mild for us, but packed with flavor). The beef was exceptionally tender and stole the show. The chicken had a light, slightly crunchy coating that we loved.
Twice Cooked Pork – Tender seasoned pork with loads of veggies. So good.
Insider tip: Ask for the homemade spicy chili oil. It’s smoky with a gentle heat that elevates everything without overpowering it. We’re guessing the spice levels are dialed back a bit for regional tastes — next time, I’m asking if they’ll turn up the “full Chinese flavor” option.

Total for dinner and four beers: $75 (plus tip). Very reasonable for the quality and experience.

We loved every minute. Eng’s isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a living piece of Kingston history. If you haven’t been, go. And don’t skip the chili oil. ️

Honestly, this is the best Chinese food I’ve had since the ’90s! It’s so simple – no fuss, no gimmicks, just really good food that just warms your soul. And get this, they do takeout, which I wouldn’t normally do for a place an hour away, but this place is the exception! Totally worth 2 hours of drive time

This was some of the best Chinese food I had to date and worth the drive up from Pennsylvania to try out.

We had the Wonton Soup with Pork, PuPu platter for 2, the ribs, orange chicken/beef special and ice cream for dessert, I had a scoup of coconut which had real flakes in the ice cream and coffee which was very flavorful. My friend had the blueberry cheese cake ice cream which he raved about. The Mai Tai was amazing also.

Service was very friendly and attentive, they may be slightly understaffed. I enjoyed the classic appearance of the interior, very old school and I loved it.

I will be back!

Fun old fashioned place and the food was good! The Egg Foo Yung and Cantonese Steak with broccoli were especially good! Prices were very reasonable and the portions were huge! Very friendly staff! (Just a little bit slow and server didn’t know how several dishes were made and we ordered the chop suey but didn’t get the dish). We’ll definitely be back when we’re next in town.

We were passing through the area coming from south Jersey and decided to stop in. The atmosphere was welcoming and really awesome. It is tastefully decorated inside i really liked it. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. When we were seated we were brought out hot tea and crackers which I was not expecting but it was really nice. The waitress was helpful with recommendations. The food came out surprisingly fast. All of the food we got was excellent and very reasonably priced for what you get. We tried the chicken lo mein, chicken chow mein, and chicken and broccoli as well as fried rice and of course egg rolls. Nothing bad to say about any of it. If you’re looking for a filling meal at a place that is comfortable and friendly, I highly recommend trying out Engs. Wish we were here on a smorgasbord day! If we’re ever in the area again we will be sure to stop by again!

I visited here last Friday for their smorgasbord. There was a huge line, which my wife and I happily waited in based on all their fantastic reviews. Unfortunately, I would have a hard time wanting to come back here. I am surprised to have had the experience I had, because I chose to go here because of their positive reviews!

The wait time was high, which I was fine with. Their website says they only take reservations for 5 or more people. While we were waiting, numerous reservations came in to be seated, and only one group had 5 people. That was frustrating, because I would have made a reservation. Additionally, numerous reserved tables stayed reserved long after the time the waitress called their original reserved time. That’s kinda unacceptable when you have a huge line that doesn’t even fit into your establishment. Give a 15 minute grace period and then seat the people actually there.

I’m not sure about the takeout or other dine-in foods, but the buffet was… actually really bad. General Chicken was weird and tangy, chicken and broccoli was in an extremely thick chunky gravy and the broccoli was so overcooked it was complete mush, the egg roll was FULL of celery for some reason, the pork dumpling had so much dough and barely any filling, and many of the other items also had weird sourness to them rather than a nice balance of flavors.

On a positive note, the fried rice and lomein noodles were good, the bourbon chicken was nice, and the ribs had great flavor but were EXTREMELY dry. The food kept coming out fresh because it was busy, which was appreciated, so I’m really not sure why all of this was the way it was. Maybe it was just a rough night! I wish this place the best, and it seems like they have a big fan base, which is great! I wish I was one of them!

Great food. I was introduced to the restaurant in the 60’s as a kid. I still order from here from time to time and have dined at the restaurant as well as had it to go. Great food and a Kingston fixture. Congratulations on your recent James Beard Award!!

Engs is an institution. The food is good, the service is super friendly, and the prices are very affordable. There’s no wonder they’ve been around for almost a hundred years! I’m thrilled that they recently reopened the dining room.

This place is amazing and delicious. Establishments like this are few and far between these days. A proper old school Chinese restaurant and institution of classic Americana. They care enough to make their egg rolls in-house. The decor is perfect, and the building and signage is utterly charming. There’s a reason they were scouted to feature in a hit TV show (known for its cinematography, might I add).

All of the bad reviews saying the food is tasteless have had their palettes conditioned by Chinese takeout that all basically comes from a distribution center and loaded with sugar and flavor enhancers that you can’t pronounce. That’s why the sauces all taste the same and an egg roll tastes identical in Minnesota or Connecticut.

Keep doing what you’re doing Eng’s. You’re a gem.
