We have been to Sushi Kushi Toyo a number of times. The Avocado Salad is to die for! We keep our bowls for entire meal so we can use that sauce on everything!
Great selection of rolls and quality is always very good. Only reason I rated the atmosphere a 4 was that the dining area had a very strong smell of cleaner/disinfectant. While I appreciate things being clean, the strong scent was off-putting, especially to someone like me who is sensitive to some fragrances.

My recent visit to Sushi Kushi Toyo was okay overall, but it didn’t quite live up to the quality I’ve experienced in the past. The sushi, which is usually the highlight, wasn’t as fresh or flavorful this time around. It wasn’t bad, just noticeably below their usual standard.

There’s definitely room for improvement, and I’m hoping future visits return to the level of quality I’ve come to expect.

Sushi kushi remains the best and most authentic sushi and Japanese cuisine in the northern suburbs. I have been eating here a long time, but decided to update my review.
The menu is very extensive. I still probably haven’t tried half the items. The sushi rolls are creative without being crazy. Sushi kushi is one of the few places that will have fish far beyond the usual tuna and salmon and eel.
We also like the skewers though I still have no idea why they call them kushi instead of yakitori.
Service is good and patient with explaining all the dishes and specials.

This was a lovely interior, with different segments of the restaurant spread out, which made in nice and quiet in each section. The music also was low which was perfect for conversation. I was not impressed by the quality of the sushi though. It didn’t taste very fresh or flavorful. Honestly, not any better than what I’ve gotten at buffets or at grocery stores. It didn’t really hit the spot, and sushi ALWAYS hits the spot for me. Our server could barely understand us too, though the food came quickly.

I love reviewing and eating Japanese food, and being from Japan, I find it very difficult to come across truly authentic Japanese cuisine. Most American Japanese restaurants barely scratch the surface of what Japanese food really is.

This place not only captured the atmosphere of a real Japanese restaurant, but the food itself was genuinely close to what you’d find in Japan. I had the pleasure of ordering the Zaru Soba Tempura, and I honestly haven’t had authentic tempura in a long time. I’m happy to say it exceeded my expectations, the food was outstanding.

What made the experience even better was that the waiter spoke to us in Japanese, which really showed the restaurant’s respect for the culture and added to the authenticity.

Japanese authenticity rating (if this restaurant were in Japan): 7.8/10
American-Japanese restaurant rating: 8.9/10

Overall, this place is amazing and absolutely worth visiting.

Our server Lucy was PHENOMENAL! She is on point with service and is a great asset to Sushi Kushi. My friends loved their dishes, me personally I ordered the Veggie Udon (pictured) and it severely lacked flavor. It took loads and loads of soy sauce to make it edible. But, can’t complain about the price. Exceptional dining experience, just wish I ordered something different.

Ordered 2 of the Uni shooters to start with at $12.50 each. They had about 1/5 of one piece of Uni in each one, barely enough to cover the bottom of the shot glass. What a joke. I sent them back. Then got the sashimi that I ordered. Octopus size was a little bit bigger than my thumb nail. Service was poor only had 1 waiter during lunch hour. Tables were sticky. Used to be the real deal with Japanese sushi chefs. Now you don’t see any chefs. All portions have been heavily downsized. Went from a 10 out of 10 to a 3 out of 10. My guess is maybe new owners…

What an enjoyable dining experience. Plentiful and delicious, our big party of 20 had beef, salmon and chicken bento boxes and all feasted heartedly! Service went smoothly and quickly. Definite will want to return!

This restaurant has been around long time. One of our friends and family’s favorite sushi restaurant. The interior has been expanded 2-3 times, so there’s plenty of seating indoors, which were full one Saturday night we were there. The sushi and kitchen food are all consistently delicious every time we have them. There’s so many favorites from spicy kinoko, buta kimchi, ika butter, karage from hot appetizers, and the carpaccio is a must have! Their sushi and sashimi are always fresh. What makes this place special is that most of the sushi bar and kitchen employees have been here since basically the beginning, and thats why you can tell that the food is always original. Annie, the front person, is always friendly and makes this place feels like eating in your relative’s home.
