I had a very nice dining experience at this restaurant today. I guess this is my 4th visit over the years. I have never been disappointed. The spicy Thai shrimp appetizer was delicious , a large quantity of shrimp very fresh and the shrimp were large.. the Japanese Wagyu beef was melt in your mouth, tender, and cooked to perfection. I also had roasted potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Both were perfect and fresh.. the dessert of the day was apple pie. It was wonderful. Highly recommended restaurant with passing through Whiteville on the way to the coast or heading through this area on the way home.. actually it’s not too far when you’re at the coast to make a trip there and return to your vacation. That’s what I did. All prices were extremely reasonable concerning the quality of the food.

We celebrated my Mothers Birthday early today at the Chef and the Frog in Whiteville NC.
It was Fantastic!
We all ordered something different. Mediterranean Omlet, grilled Salmon with grits, Cordon Blu , and 9 oz steak and we shared the Shrimp and grits.
We had no room for dessert, next time we will know better.
Check them out, and if you are nearby or plan on passing through.
OR check out Sophie’s Cafe Bistro across the street!
I heard the pastries and the Ruben are outstanding!

I really wanted to enjoy this local restaurant, but unfortunately the experience was disappointing. The restaurant appears unprepared to accommodate gatherings larger than about six people, which made our visit stressful instead of enjoyable. Service slowed significantly, food timing was inconsistent, and it felt like the kitchen was overwhelmed.

Another surprise was a $3 per-slice cake cutting fee simply for bringing in an outside cake — especially frustrating given that outside desserts were only used because the in-house options were limited and didn’t meet our needs. Fees like this should be clearly communicated upfront.

Small-town restaurants can be wonderful community spots, but organization, transparency, and the ability to handle reservations appropriately really matter. I hope management considers improving staffing, communication, and policies so future guests have a better experience.

In response to the owner’s retaliation due to constructive criticism:

Thank you for clarifying your policies. To be clear, my review was not confusion about scratch cooking or restaurant procedures — it was disappointment in the overall experience and tone of service. Most guests fully understand wait times and restaurant policies when they are paired with hospitality and professionalism. Unfortunately, our group did not feel welcomed or valued during what was meant to be a simple birthday celebration. You made it very obvious that your restaurant doesn’t enjoy parties of 6 or more. Also, a policy can be technically correct and still be handled poorly. What was especially disappointing — and honestly unprofessional — was hearing the owner speak negatively about one of the hosts in front of guests. Speaking poorly about patrons within earshot of other customers creates an uncomfortable environment and reflects poorly on the business as a whole. Trust me, it has not gone unnoticed and from what I understand, this has happened before. We chose your restaurant to celebrate and support a local business, which is why the experience was so disappointing. A policy can be clearly written and still handled poorly in practice — and that was ultimately the issue. I genuinely hope future guests receive the welcoming experience your response describes. Wishing you the best moving forward.

WOW!!!!! A hidden gem! Trent and I have enjoyed MANY fine dining restaurants throughout Horry County through the years, this one TOPS them in all in so many ways! The owners are telling their fairytale story from the menu to the walls of beautifully framed photos of their lives together! If you are a wine lover, as I am, Do yourself a favor and ask Steve to suggest a perfect bottle pairing. If you are lucky, he will bring something from his own reserve!
I don’t care what you choose from this menu, you will not be disappointed everything is spot on fantastic!!!

What a fabulous dining experience. Every time we visit NC we have to go to The Chef and the Frog. The food is perfection, the service is delightful and the atmosphere is relaxing. We had the pleasure of being visited by both the Chef and the Frog as we dined. I wish we lived closer so we could come by more often. Highly recommend.

Phenomenal food (the wagu steak special with a crab cake on top, and the sweet potato polenta cake instead of asparagus, and fried potato wedges; and chocolate mousse and a special: brown-sugar pound cake with sautéed apples, both for dessert)… all for less than $100 with a really good tip. It was some of the best food I’ve ever had, and the service was incredible too–very welcoming of both me and my sweet dog, and really kind and respectful to the other patrons as well. I can’t wait to come back

My husband and I dined here this past Friday (16 August 2024). It’s an hour away from where we live in Leland. One couple joined us for the evening and it was a first visit for all of us. Another friend of ours had recommended this place a few months back, as well as my husband’s doctor (on a recent visit) who works in Whiteville.

The interior provides a casual atmosphere with black table clothes and chairs, street lamps, and potted plants around the room. The tables are nicely set apart. While this place is casual – no need to dress up – the food and service is excellent.

Kimberly was our waitress, who was attentive and patient while we went through the menu trying to decide what to order. So many good choices! The menu is a mix of French and Asian foods. Both couples ordered the Cambodian eggrolls and fiery sweet Thai shrimp appetizers. In addition, one friend ordered the onion soup (bowl).

While waiting for our appetizers, Chef Sokun came to our table and talked with us for a few minutes. She also wanted to make sure we knew how to eat the Cambodian eggrolls, as well as welcoming us. Yes, my husband and I knew how: take a lettuce leaf, place the roll, mint, peanuts and dipping sauce on top, roll it up and eat. My husband and I have a favorite restaurant in Hawaii that serves the eggrolls in the same manner. The four rolls were filled with minced chicken and other fresh ingredients; the wrappers were thin and crispy.

The Thai shrimp was a large portion, about 8-9 shrimp. They were breaded and fried, and topped with a delicious sauce. Both appetizers were excellent. Such wonderful flavors. We could have shared the appetizers but we wanted our own.

For my entrée (and one friend), I had the Beef Bourguignon, which is served with rice. I asked to have roasted potatoes in lieu of the rice. The meat was tender, no knife is needed. The vegetables were nicely cooked in the herb and wine sauce. My husband (and our other friend) had the Cambodian beef, served with jasmine rice. Another excellent dish. The food is outstanding (they use locally sourced, fresh ingredients) and reasonable prices for what you get.

Fresh baked bread and butter was served at the table.

There is a full bar and a nice long list of wines. I had the “not so classic cosmo” that was very tasty and went down easily. With my entrée, I had a glass of the Cotes due Rhone.

The ‘Frog’ is Guillaume, Chef Sokun’s husband, owner of the place. He came to the table a couple of times. On the second time after we finished our meal, we invited him to sit with us, so we all talked for a while. He was very personable and we enjoyed talking to him.

I wish they were closer to where we live. We’ll have to go back and spend an afternoon in town before having dinner there again (or maybe brunch!). There are other dishes that I want to try.

So glad we came here!

Wonderful discovery on the way home from the beach. The waitstaff was amazing. The “frog” was a gracious host. The food was beautiful and delicious. The she-crab soup was some of the best I’ve ever had. We ordered the filet mignon and the roasted pork belly with chimichurri sauce. We topped our meal off with delicate meringue with a caramel cream sauce. We will definitely be returning to try some of the other dishes on the menu.

Our waiter was very attentive & friendly. Our food was good. I had the she crab soup & Pad Thai. The dessert was not my favorite, but it was the texture of the chocolate cake that was not for my taste.
