What a disappointment. We saw long lines at the food truck in Yuma and decided to visit the restaurant. We came in on a Sunday at noon. More seats were empty than full, they had a limited one page menu, and were informed by the little girl, who did a fine job waiting on us, that they were out of brisket and several sides, including beans, collard greens, and french fries.

Management should ask themselves how they can be out of sides and BBQ meat at opening on a weekend? I guess they don’t have the smoker onsite or running daily? I suspect that’s the case as the ribs seemed to be reheated or overcooked. The bones were soft and edible, if you like that.

The BBQ sauce was cold and poured all over the ribs. The sauce should be on the side so you can choose because good smoked meat should stand on its own. A better sauce can complement the meat without drowning it. The Mac n Cheese and slaw were good. The bacon in the breakfast bowl was undercooked.

They appeared to be short on staff, but managers were onsite talking to locals and not attending to details that could have prevented the problems we encountered.

They should probably stick to the food truck. We will definitely not be returning and would not recommend it.

Edit 22 Sept 2024:
Long-term business travel down the road at Yuma Proving Ground. Great spot! Owner (Frank) was super friendly, food was good, good brews on draft, out-of-the-way place.

I would recommend calling ahead to make sure Frank is operating. But it’ll be worth the drive!

Hands Down the best BBQ we’ve had in awhile! They were at the fair this past weekend and I went back to the fair a second time specifically for their food. The first night my daughter and I had the loaded mac n cheese and then I also got a Texas Twankie! The servings were HUGE and my daughter loved it so much she crushed the whole thing which was more than I could eat. The Texas Twankies were so good I dragged my husband and son back to the fair so they could try them as well! As suspected they both LOVED them. We all couldnt stop talking about how good they were. We also got the BBQ Ramen and I would drive all the way to Yuma just to eat some more! Everyone that was working the event were super kind, helpful, and very energetic! I cannot honestly say enough about the all around dynamic and value to what they do and offer! I will be hunting them down at any event I can!

Food used to be top notch. Especially the fish and chips. Friday it was overcooked and no flavor. The burger had no flavor whatsoever wry skimpy burger.
Totally disappointed.
There was a small group with swearing and loud talking.

The Smokin’ Hen House is about 20 minutes outside of Yuma, you can either take Highway 95 or S24 to get there. Their located inside the Hidden Shores Resort.

If you’re looking for more than just great food, the resort gives you access to its boat launch for $15. That gives you access to the boat launch and the beach. There’s no cost just to visit the restaurant.

The Smokin’ Hen House is family owned and operated. The recipes are a combination of their family’s recipes and the creative minds of the family matriarch Mama Cheri and her kin.

The Smokin’ Hen House received the Yuma’s Best award for catering. They’re known for their ribs, chicken and their signature Texas Twinkie (stuffed jalapeño wrapped in bacon).

Aside from amazing barbecue, they also offer some incredible desserts like homemade pie, and a variety of cheesecake bites.

Now, if you’re the type that likes a little sweetness with their Guiness, ask about their float.

Delicious BBQ! My husband had the nachos. I had the Burrito. Both were delicious! The bar tender did mention they can close early if they aren’t busy, just to be noted.

We had a wonderful lunch. I had a pulled pork sandwich, my friend had the
Pulled pork meal & a to go order for her husband. So much food I had leftovers for dinner that night. The owner was very
friendly & made sure we were taken care of. The atmosphere is very cute, clean & cozy. It’s on the Colorado River, Hidden Hills Resort. They also have a food truck, that’s a plus too. I highly recommend

A real country bbq spot atmosphere. The owner and crew were attentive and care about the quality of food they sell. The food is delicious and definitely will give you the “itis” with the big portions served.

Pros: Everyone was friendly, pulled pork was decent and the serving size was good.
Cons: Very limited menu, much less than we had seen online and other reviewers talked about which was what prompted us to make the drive. The meat only comes with one side which doesn’t really make it a meal when there’s no cornbread or Texas toast or anything. For the price (which was higher than the menu said), 2 sides seems much more appropriate. Our bill before the tip was $47 for 2 1 meat plates, one with only a salad and the other with fries and macaroni (extra) plus 2 pops.
Overall it was ok but nothing to go out of the way for and definitely not worth $47.
