It started innocently. Kage and I wandering the tap list like naive explorers discovering forbidden pleasures while our SpinQueen Jess sat nearby reading Harry Potter smut fan fiction, audibly gasping and giggling, which somehow made the room shimmer with mischief, and Ben marveled at the lighting. And then there was Dolly, the softest, most non-judgmental little pup, curled up beside us as if to say, “I know exactly what you’re doing, and it’s ok.”
That’s when it hit me.
This wasn’t just a bar.
This was a secret indulgence, dripping in amber ale, playful Kölsch, and irresistible charm.
You see, Todd, the brewer, doesn’t make beer. He seduces it and serves it. The I Like Turtles Red Ale hit me like a dangerous ruby-red headed ex, intoxicating, almost 9% ABV, and silky smooth enough to make me question all my life choices. The Little Red Kölsch, especially when served in a wheel, is a pure tease, effervescent and flirtatious, and poured to the perfect size sparkling across your lips demanding you come back for more. The Lagerhead is the dependable lover of the group, crisp, clean, honest, comforting, making you sigh with relief and gratitude amidst the delicious chaos.
But the cask ales… oh, the cask ales. They aren’t drinks. They are intimate encounters. Hand-pulled, unfiltered, naturally carbonated, served at perfect cellar temperature, they slip across your tongue like silk, and leave your senses tingling. Deep malt, gentle hops, subtle yeast; each sip is like a whispered secret from the pub itself, a private invitation you didn’t know you were waiting for. Once you’ve had their cask, it makes you never want a regular beer again, it’s deliciously sexy, but polite in a way that makes your heart ache.
Then there’s Kevin, the Boston-born bartender, the kind of person who knows exactly how to tempt you without even trying. Funny, sharp, warm, he doesn’t just pour drinks; he orchestrates little scandals in pint glasses, sliding the perfect ale your way with a wink, making you feel like the pub exists entirely to tease and delight you into something you haven’t experienced before in Downtown St Pete.
The food is dangerously good. Provided by Jack’s London Grill (Another incredibly quaint spot) the Scotch Eggs, with golden, yolks wrapped in a seasoned exterior, crackle against your teeth like promises. The Steak & Ale Pie is indulgent, buttery, flaky, and filled with tender beef in deep, rich ale gravy, an embrace in pastry form that leaves you guilty and satisfied all at once. And yes, Monster Munch waits at the bar, absurdly British, salty, crunchy, and deliciously rebellious, a little kiss in every bite.
The atmosphere is intoxicating. Warm amber light bounces off exposed tanks. Laughter and murmured conversations echo softly. TVs flicker with sports everyone is watching as the room hums with, life, and delicious tension. Dartboards dare the brave, music hums just under chatter, and every detailed has spirit leaning in, whispering, teasing, welcoming. The pub is scandalous, and yet it hugs you like a secret lover you can finally trust.
Cycle Brewing once occupied this space, but Green Turtle has transformed it into something transgressive, something intimate, something necessary. Where Cycle gave beer, Green Turtle gives devotion, attention, seduction, warmth, and a little wicked fun. The pub flirts, tempts, dares you to stay, to taste, to fall deeper and explore your heart further
And if you’re lucky, Dolly the pup may grace the evening with that smooth fur that just makes you swoon. Pet her if fortune allows and feel that Green Turtle doesn’t just serve beer and food. It serves magic, warmth, and a joy that makes your chest tighten and your heart grin.
A pub, a love story, a naughty indulgence, and a companion all in one perfect spot.
Appreciate that the owner opened up so early and was able to take some time and chat a while with us; this is really a great hangout with a very pleasant atmosphere. Will be back. If I lived in St. Pete I would be a regular lol.
