It’s the quintessential hometown BBQ place, with the best food. We enjoyed brisket and smoked chicken (not dry, which is hard to find) and the sides were clearly homemade and delicious. The slaw is vinegar based, but white sauce tones it down nicely. We had to take smoked bologna home and we’re really enjoying having that at home on egg sandwiches. We will be frequent visitors of BawBaw’s for all our BBQ. So glad to discover it so I don’t have to drive to Kentucky for good smoked bologna … LOL (Wycliffe, STOP if you go through) …

We had BawBaws bbq for a company Christmas party and it was delicious! The ribs and pulled pork had a great smoked flavor. The ribs were huge and had a lot of meat on them. The baked beans were probably my favorite, but I have no complaints about the green beans. Give them a try whether you are local or passing through. Plenty of indoor seating and parking spots.

Knocking a star…BBQ joints should always have homemade sweet tea and styrofoam cups they go together in the south. Only offering bottled drinks is a shame. Food was tasty though.

DELICIOUS!! Served Pulled Pork for family gathering. Have enjoyed their outstanding Ribs several times. Our “foodie grown sons” who are excellent grillers and smokers call this “Old School Ribs & BBQ”. The bark is flavorful on the ribs and he chops the delicious outside cut of pork (minus fat) together with inside pork which gives it such a good flavor.
I save some rib meat and pulled pork to make Brunswick stew.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

UPDATE: Thank you for taking ownership of my review. While this experience may not have been meant to be, I appreciate your response and willingness to address it. I would not feel comfortable accepting the offer, but understanding the importance of feedback on this platform, I have updated my review accordingly. Best wishes.

ORIGINAL: Ate lunch here for the first time today. The service and atmosphere were very pleasant, which I appreciated. While my meal wasn’t bad, it just didn’t quite meet my expectations. I understand that brisket is a naturally fatty cut of meat, but the portion I received had more fat than I personally prefer and was fairly greasy. I also didn’t notice any ‘bark’ on the meat at all. The flavor itself was good, though the presentation wasn’t especially appealing to me.

Regarding the sides, the baked beans portion was on the smaller side, while the potato salad was thick, hearty, and generously served. Overall, I felt the $18.00 price point for the entre, was a bit high for my experience. That said, others may enjoy it more, and I appreciate the friendly service. I wish the restaurant continued success.

BawBaw’s BBQ is a true gem in the heart of downtown Athens. This local, family-owned spot has beautifully renovated an old building and transformed it into a BBQ palace that makes you feel right at home the moment you walk through the door. Every detail reflects pride, tradition, and a deep love for good Southern cooking.

I ordered the rib plate, which came with their signature “tater salad” and baked beans, and it did not disappoint. The ribs were tender, full of rich smoky flavor, and cooked to perfection. Honestly, they do not even need sauce — the flavor stands strong all on its own — though sauce is available for those who prefer it. What truly sets them apart is their dedication to authenticity. The smoker out back is used for all their meats as well as the baked beans, giving everything that deep, slow-smoked taste you can only get from doing things the right way.

Simply put, BawBaw’s outshines every other BBQ spot around. It delivers the kind of quality, comfort, and consistency that keeps you coming back.

And if you’re wondering how the name came to be, “BawBaw’s” is a heartfelt nod to family — the owner’s grandchildren called him BawBaw growing up, and the name just stuck. It fits perfectly, because this place truly feels like family.

P.S. A rare and welcomed bonus — they are open on Sundays, which is almost unheard of for BBQ joints around here.

I had the half chicken plate and my husband had the pulled pork sandwich. Super good!! I couldn’t finish the chicken in one sitting it was so big! I just wish there was some white sauce to go with it. Maybe there was and my husband just didn’t see it when he went to pickup the order. We will definitely be back, though!

Very disappointing! Ribs were literally black… not “bark” just burnt. The slaw is vinegar base and unfortunately appeared to be very old. The cabbage was brown, so much so the liquid was also tinted brown. All I can truly say is this is not the place to eat while in Athens.
