Johnny’s Reef has been a staple of City Island as an open-air seafood cafeteria serving customers for over 60 years. In this time, our mission has never changed: To Serve the Freshest and Most Delicious Seafood City Island has to offer. It is thronged by Bronxites—Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans, Italians, Irish, Jewish, Albanian, Slovenian, as well as people from Manhattan, Queens, Westchester and Connecticut, along with foreign tourists who have heard about its All American largess. It is as close to being in a true melting pot as any institution in the five boroughs.
Basic, long-running venue with outdoor seating serving fried & steamed seafood offerings. Cash only.

You order at the counter for things you want, so plan your order with friends so you can get what you want all at once. Send one to get the fried’s, one to get the steamed, raw, etc.
It looks like any seasonal shack on the eastern seaboard, but just a tad busier and a tad nicer. Service is good becuase it’s far enough away from the NYC grind that people aint tryna bring that vibe. They’re trying to have a different experience. It’s got great views. Cash only of course. Seating is cafeteria style. I usually have to go for a walk afterwards to help digest everything.
Prices are high if you indulge or come with your whole family, but it’s kinda in line if your tryna splurge and go big.
My usual order is steamed snow crab legs, fried calamari, fried clam strips, steamed cherry’s and little necks (or raw if it’s daytime or late summer) and a steamed whole snapper if I’m with more than 1 person. It’s a feast, but worth a gout attack.
It’s fresh seafood that’s well prepared and simple. You can’t go wrong on the cocktail sauces, butter, lemon on most items.
Been coming here since I was a kid. place has change a lot but over all I think it got better. I enjoyed today. Food was good shrimp was good overall cool spot as usual. not my go to anymore in city island but never a miss. Worth it
Came back again for Mother’s Day and like always this place just brings back so many memories
They changed their French fries and it’s was a good change it was so good loved it had the fried whitening and the red snapper both was amazing the red snapper definitely worth the extra price.
This place will always be what it is to me because of memories I’m glad they are taking steps to do new things so more people can start to make memories and have new generations here to enjoy good food for good prices.
