As a helicopter pilot, I’ve had the privilege of covering a lot of ground (and water) in my search for the perfect shrimp poboy. From the bayous of Louisiana to the beaches of the Gulf Coast, I’ve tried them all. And yet, not a single one has come close to what Ryan’s Deli serves up.
Let’s start with the bread—because any true poboy lover knows that’s where the magic begins. Ryan’s nails it: a perfect balance of crispiness on the outside with an impossibly soft interior that cradles the shrimp like it was made just for it. And the shrimp? They don’t skimp. This thing is overflowing with perfectly seasoned, crispy, and fresh shrimp that taste like they just came out of the Gulf. Every bite is pure perfection.
Ryan’s Deli isn’t just making poboys; they’re setting the gold standard. If you haven’t been, go. If you have been, you already know. No matter how far I fly, I always find my way back here for the best shrimp poboy that has ever existed.

I was living behind there in 2007 for a couple months remodeling those mobile homes and painting at Elmers chocolate factory. I gained 50 pounds eating breakfast lunch and supper there. Everything there is amazing. I even saw navy pilot from Pensacola there. I would move to Hammond just to eat there regularly. Now I take my family there when ever we’re near.

What can I say about Ryan’s deli. I can start by saying this my grandmother used to take me there when I was a young boy. Since then I moved to Dallas Texas and it’s been awhile since I’ve eaten here. I was in town visiting family and decided I stopped in. My family and I ordered some food and I had the shrimp poboy my wife had the roast beef poboy and for some strange reason they had a french fry poboy which I had never seen before. Let me say that they have food that you can actually brag about. They have a large menu which makes it hard for you to decide what you want because it’ has so many things you can choose from. The things that we did order we shared amongst ourselves and we enjoyed all of it needless to say whenever I’m in town I will stop in and try something else.

A service station with some of the most excellent food. You will love everything on the menu. I highly suggest almost anything. The chicken tenders are excellent and have no competition, the double Bucky is an awesome Burger that will have you full and satisfied, the club sandwiches and the muffalettas awesome! Great people. Fast service and I highly recommend. The gas they sell is straight. Gas no. Ethanol. The food is usually ready within 10 to 15 minutes so you can order ahead and be confident that it’ll be ready when you get there. A local favorite and this is the number one place for cheeseburgers, salads, Po boys, muffaletta, and comfort foods. They also sell liquor and tobacco. These people are very nice and I highly recommend this business.

Their shrimp poboys ALWAYS hit. The shrimp is a little small, but always fresh and well seasoned. Not to mention that they completely overload the poboys, so you are definitely getting your moneys worth. One of the best Poboys in Hammond

Yes it’s a gas station and a liquor store? But the muffuletta was delicious! Order the smallest one they have unless you have a big appetite. Those things are ginormous.

I mean, this is a new favorite place! Feels weird to get dinner in a gas station, but the reviews were great, so we stopped by and got 2 Club Po Boys to go. And whoa! That bread is KILLER!! The sandwich was filled with meat and toppings and we just scarfed them down! Can’t wait to try the rest!

Of all the gas stations I have eaten at in Louisiana, this is among the top ten. Setvice was kind of meh, neither friendly nor rude. I guess anybody can be named anything. But I will say neither guy looked like a “Ryan,” nor did they look like muffalatta experts, which is why I mention it; don’t run out the door. They seem to know what they’re doing. However, nobody pressed my sandwich. Most sandwiches on the board were listrd at under ten dollars. My sandwich was fourteen. It was above average for a sandwich. I have no muferience to compare it to. I liked it but I’m not going to be back in my next bootcamp saying, “Yeah, well, the day we graduate, I’m going to Ryan’s Gas Station for a coldcut and olive sandwich, oh Lawd!” But i liked it better than the $5 preformed frozen “crab cake” i got with it. That was a waste of money. The Moofie was not.

I recently visited Ryan’s Deli on South Range Road in Hammond, LA, and I was absolutely impressed. Tucked into a gas‑station‑convenience store setup, this family‑owned spot delivers big flavors and even bigger portions that locals rave about.
From the moment I walked in, I could tell this place was something special. Their muffuletta sandwich is a standout — quite possibly the best around, with orders so generous that it easily feeds two people.
Equally remarkable are the po’boys. The shrimp po’boy features perfectly seasoned, crunchy popcorn shrimp, though can be a bit salty at times—so take that into account if you’re sensitive to sodium.
Other favorites include the roast beef and club po’boys, also frequently as overstuffed and delicious, loaded with meats and toppings that make each bite satisfying.
You will want to praise the friendly, efficient service and the casual, cozy atmosphere of the deli—despite being part of a convenience store, the vibe feels genuine and welcoming.
Prices are reasonable, with most po’boys… depending on size and type, and you get your money’s worth — the sandwiches are so big, they can split them between two people comfortably They also offer combo plates, catering trays, and side options like salads or fries.
If you’re in Hammond and craving a hearty sandwich or po’boy with plenty of flavor and generous portions, Ryan’s Deli should be on your list. Great food, friendly staff, and hearty servings at fair prices. with local flavor done right.
