Reviews
We ordered sushi rolls and teriyaki steak. The steak was tender and full of flavors. The accompanying veggies mixed very good with the meat.
The sushi rolls very fresh and had exceptional flavors.
The service was very good, our waitress very helpful and checked on us frequently.
Konomi definitely 5 star resturant with attention to service and fresh food.
Definitely will come back here again sometime soon!!
I am a sucker for the deeply flavorful cut known as Oxtail. Exquisite beefiness with a unique mouth feel will always be a yes for me! I do lament the fact that as a young man, this cut was one step above scrap. Now though, I am far from alone in my enjoyment of it which has driven the price point up to that of a sirloin or ribeye, in my area.
Back to the meal and experience. The cut lived up to its billing but the broth could have used a couple firm nudges to escape the “one note” moniker. As with any good Asian restaurant, fish sauce was readily available and with that, some soy and chili paste melding the beef, bok choy and ginger, I happily slurped away!
What was a good experience was shadowed by clunky service though. Our meals came 5 minutes apart with my seaweed salad not coming out until after asking for it. I am chalking this up to us being the first patrons for dinner service. I imagine our waiter needed to shake the cobwebs loose and get into his rhythm.
Overall a good experience and would not hesitate stopping in and trying other selections from the menu.
Lastly, the service. We walk in and are ignored for a couple of minutes as employees walk by (at least greet the customer with a hello someone will be with you shortly). We then get our name on a list and sit and wait. Minutes go by and three people come in, get their name on the list, and sit and wait too. Twenty minutes go by and the hostess grabs them for a table. Me and my wife look at each other like that’s odd because they came in minutes after us. A minute goes by and I walk up to the hostess stand. Hostess comes back and I am guessing can see the face I have and says we can be seated and seats us. Perhaps it’s wise to sit the people in the order on your list.
Anyway, bland food, poor service, and a little pricey. And I know my Asian food. I’ve lived in South Korea, traveled to China and Japan, and this food was far from any ramen or bao buns I ate there.
This restaurant seems to get good reviews from local Iowans who haven’t traveled outside of Iowa their whole lives.
It took over 20 minutes just to get a drink order in and we had only asked for a couple waters. Then, after getting our drinks, it took more than an hour to receive all of our food. We noticed our sushi sitting on the counter for over 20 minutes, and had to flag down three different staff members just to check on our ramen. We only saw our actual server a few times during the whole experience, and didn’t get any updates until we had to flag down and ask a new waitress to check on what was going on.
Other tables that were seated after us were being served first, and we noticed a few others also waiting a long time or receiving their food in parts like us. When everything finally came out, some of the food was cold. On top of that, there was an automatic gratuity added to our check.
I’ve worked in the service industry for about four years, so I understand that delays happen and things get busy. But the lack of communication, cold food, and needing to constantly ask for updates made the experience really frustrating. I’m open to hearing how this could be made right, but overall, we left very disappointed.
