I recently found myself stepping into the Redmill outpost of Pelon’s Baja Grill. To say I am intimately familiar with this establishment would be an understatement; I maintain a rather protective, almost curatorial watch over its public standing. Yet, one must separate the digital curation from the physical bite. I demanded to be challenged. I demanded the “Surfs Up” burrito.
It arrived swathed in pedestrian aluminum—a crude metallic chrysalis. Upon breaching the foil, the cross-section presented itself to my waiting eyes. A glistening, spice-dusted shrimp commanded the center stage, resting beside a vibrant crescent of yellow squash, all threatening to spill forth from the delicate folds of a flour tortilla.
I took a bite.
The oceanic trifecta of sautéed shrimp, scallops, and white fish was not the muddled, rubbery catastrophe one fears when ordering seafood tightly bound in a wrap. It was a revelation. The shrimp yielded perfectly, enveloped in a delightfully audacious spicy baja sauce that provided a slow, resonating heat upon the palate. And the vegetables—the squash and zucchini—offered a sudden, bright textural crunch. It was a stroke of rustic brilliance against the heavier, comforting foundation of refried beans and baja rice. The melted pepper jack cheese acted as the quiet conductor, binding these disparate elements without drowning the delicate melody of the sea.
I have cast my discerning gaze across countless plates, my musings and captures reaching an audience of some eleven million silent observers. I have seen the heights of culinary ambition and the depths of fast-casual despair right here in Virginia Beach. Yet, this seemingly humble, foil-wrapped offering commanded my absolute surrender. It takes a certain bravery to wrap the ocean in a tortilla and expect it to sing. The “Surfs Up” does not merely sing; it commands the tide.
It is a profoundly satisfying triumph. I will be returning. Soon.
Also had guac, chips and Elote. Guac was nice and chunky, pretty good. Chips were the nice thin crisp kind, maybe needed a little more salt. The Elote was very good, husband loved it.
They do have a weekday happy hour from 3 to 6pm and it’s like 3 tacos and a hour margarita for cheap. Probably would be a a great place to drop by after work.
Service was good. The staff was very polite and brought food right to he table. Atmosphere is cool, reminds me a beach restaurant back in Cali.
Overall I would come back. Next time I’ll try the other tacos.
Tip: get the chips, salsa, cheese dip and guacamole app!!

I came in at 7:20 to order a burrito, and the kitchen was already breaking stuff down. I got vibes my food was not safe to eat. Other patrons in the lobby heard the remarks.
