Japonica Redondo Beach

Social Profile:

Sushi/Ramen restaurant in Redondo Beach. Great Happy Hour and best sake selections in South bay. Sake sommelier and chef Taka Sada’s journey began in Osaka, Japan. As a carefree youth Taka always remembers enjoying bargain sake with friends, but his true passion for sake flew into high gear after trying premium sake. It’s Taka’s father who taught him that sake exists for food while educating him on the fine points of pairing. Soon after Taka began his culinary career and in 2002, with his life partner Chika, opened Japonica! Their journey in originating authentic Japanese Izakaya-Sushi advances daily and with the addition of discovering smoked methods to enhance the umami in ingredients, the possibilities are endless.

Cool, casual option offering izakaya fare & a variety of sake choices in a refined space.

Great place for Sushi. Spicy Tantan Ramen was full of flavor. Dungeons and Dragons roll was so fresh and full of flavor too. Highly recommend.

Came here for a quick sushi fix before heading to the airport, and everything we ordered was off the chain! Super fresh, crispy, and perfectly seasoned. Every roll we tried hit the spot. We also enjoyed the seaweed salad—it had great flavor and texture. I noticed they were handing out complimentary sake shots, which was a nice touch and added to the vibe. They even had a kids menu, which we took advantage of . I’d definitely come back if I’m in LA again!

This is a hip Japanese place with outdoor seating and heaters. This would have been a 5 star, but kitchen could not get our food out all together, for 6 people.

The food was fantastic we had everything from bowl, soup, and sushi.

Our waiter was very attentive as possible, the place was packed with a line outside.

Our family would surely visit again.

Made a reservation for 5:45. Didn’t get seated until 6:30. Granted they were busy, a Saturday night. But a reservation. Never got drink refills. Staff kindness was okay, could’ve been better. We were missing lots of our food. I would not recommend their tantans (ramen) sushi was good though, and their house made smoked soy sauce was to die for.

Small restaurant on PCH, with tables and a small sushi bar. The staff is friendly and the items we ordered came out quickly. We ordered the gyoza, white lightening roll and Kyoto kryptonite roll. All delicious and very different from other sushi restaurants. The soy sauce they use is made by the owners wife and has a smoky flavor, different and super tasty. You can buy it by the bottle too. Can’t wait to try the Ramen on my next visit.

I had heard amazing reviews of this place and I’m SO glad we finally tried it for happy hour! Such an amazing deal for really great sushi. We got the bumblebee roll, which paired perfectly with their signature soy sauce. I think we’ve found our new favorite!

Subpar fusion sushi.
Salty, lacking fish flavor.
Udon overcooked, lackluster taste and texture. Vague uni flavor.
Atmosphere not bad. Server attentive.

Overrated.

An experience beyond my expectation. After paddle board, we chose a restaurant based on Dine LA map. At first I thought it was just a good Japan cuisine restaurant, like most of Japanese ones. (For context, we are asian, it’s safe to say we have plenty experiences in having asian food haha).

We ordered 2 2-person combo, $70 each. It starts to amaze me when bluefin tuna sashimi was served, thick cutted, so fresh, the quality is as good as what we had in Tokyo! What touched me later were the rolls. Not only because of the perfect combination of ingredients, (three kinds of sashimi in one roll), but how subtle the chef treated the food. Even the cucumber/celtuce is cutted and shaped for ultimate taste and texture. We ordered four plates of rolls and all of them were served with different sauces, textures.

The only pity is that the food is so delicious that I didn’t have time to take photos, We ate every last bite of food. One of my friends even scoop the sauce. It’s definitely worth the money!

Ate here 2 times in one week, the shrimp tempora is absolut perfection or a taste of fried heaven! Go with the sake sampler, it is very fun. I liked 2:3 one was too sweet for my taste but my date drank it. The ginger is excellent, too! Really enjoyed the special sushi. I’m not a fan of white lightning roll, but an interesting concept, very much like scampi as a roll.
