While often known as a Japanese spot, the real gem at Shine lies in its Shanghainese menu. The Drunken Chicken was light and flavorful, and the glazed lotus roots were a standout appetizer – perfectly crunchy, lightly sweet, and filled with glutinous rice. The stir-fried eel & pork belly were fragrant and satisfying, and the scallion oil noodles simple yet comforting. To finish, the sesame ball tangyuan was a lovely dessert – super chewy texture in osmanthus rice wine.

The service was warm and attentive, and the space feels modern yet cozy in a charming corner of Lincoln Park. A true hidden gem for authentic Shanghainese cooking!

I’ve eaten there several times, always excellent well-priced ample portions, and delicious flavors! Kid-Friendly, exceptionally courteous staff. Great that they have straight Asian as well as sushi! Newly decorated, creating a fresh lovely ambience. Very nice place! PS Their Shanghai menu is a semi-secret delight!

Their Shanghai Menu makes it to be my top Chinese restaurant in Chicago

Have been here several times for the Shanghai menu but honestly might not be coming back in a while. The food is rather authentic and so it really helps to come here when I miss my hometown flavors terribly. The menu carries lots of traditional and “real” dishes which is what we love and crave for.
However, lately the quality has been inconsistent. The fish 熏鱼 and the pork 红烧肉 are both soft and tender one day, but hard and over-cooked the next. Soups can be super bland one day and way too salty on another. We have tried to put in notes when ordering (e.g,. Less spicy/salty) but felt that they were never honored. Overall, it feels a bit “try your luck” each time. The other thing is that sometimes when you order ahead the person who answers the Wechat messages can be a bit rude… finally, it can get a bit pricy if ordering seafood (crabs especially) and from the Shanghai menu only. We’ve been here 5+ times and it’s always been ~$200 or more for 4 people.
In short, I truly have mixed feelings for this place and wish that the quality can be more consistent. If that can be achieved we’d be more than happy to make this place the go-to for every occasion.

Disappointing experience that seems to indicate a thorough mediocrity from the food to the service. Beverage-wise, the ginger martini ran way too sweet that one could discern neither the ginger nor the martini. I ordered the salmon sashimi as recommended by the server because it was allegedly very fresh. And indeed, it was so fresh that I tasted ice all over the fish. Other items were okay: some of them had enticing presentation but the quality seemed rather unimpressive. Last but not least, the staff was rather rude: I arrived for a reserved table but was hushed to a corner for more than five minutes so they could “figure out which table was reserved.” I’d expect the level of food and service at a much cheaper venue.

Great Asian food! The dumplings and the pad Thai are exceptionally good. The portions are big so better be hungry when you go there.

I loved Shine Rise and it was cool to see that they have an authentic Shanghai cuisine menu. Really talented sushi chefs and we had some really good nigiri. Rolls are good too, their flaming maki was awesome. Service was on point, we went on a slow day but they were attentive. Try their Dungeness crab, but for Shanghainese menu items you have to call 24 hours in advance for preparation. Also get some nigiri, and the lychee martini. Fantastic and will go back.

Really great food and a very friendly staff. The seared tuna was amazing. Best spring rolls I’ve had in a long time. We can’t wait to go back to Shine!

Disappointed by Unprofessional Communication and Declining Quality

I never leave negative reviews to restaurant , but I feel compelled to share this experience to help others avoid similar frustration. I contacted this restaurant on Sunday to request a reservation for the following Sunday, clearly stating that I needed until Thursday to confirm. See screenshot attached and I have used GPT translated it into English. They did not respond at all for three days. Then, out of the blue on Wednesday, they informed me that my order had already been placed—without my confirmation or consent.

This kind of communication is not just unprofessional, it’s disrespectful. No follow-up, no courtesy check-in, and no regard for the customer’s timeline. It felt like they made a decision for us without our input, which is unacceptable.

To make matters worse, many recent reviews echo concerns about the declining quality of food here. See screenshot of reviews of other Chinese customer. Sadly, our experience aligns with that trend—not just in service, but in overall hospitality.

I hope this feedback encourages the restaurant to improve its communication and respect for customer preferences. Until then, I’d recommend others proceed.

The place is very relax and the atmosphere is delicate. The service is wonderful very polite and respectful. the price is regular is not expensive. The food is good for me, I ate the same food in other country and this restaurant it’s not bad. But I recommend for me try the fried rice all the combination is excellent, and 1 plate for two is good because is too much for one person before may you try appetizer.
