To be fair, the decor and atmosphere is one of the best I’ve visited in Canada. The Unaju was very tasty and generous portion wise, along with right pricing ($25). However, the sashimi platter was abysmally small in portions despite the $95 price tag – throwing in 3 pieces of chutoro does not justify the price. Kaisendon was fresh and tasty ($35), same with the rainbow roll, they get a pass.
All in all, decent experience but likely won’t return.

We had a wonderful dining experience at this sushi bar. The food was exceptional, with incredibly fresh seafood that truly melts in your mouth. We ordered the sushi platter that came with an assortment of sushi and Chawammushi. The Chawanmushi was rich and comforting, and the uni was wonderfully fresh and delicate. The tempura was cooked to perfection—crispy yet light, not too greasy. Order the uni bombs to get the fresh uni in that light crispy tempura batter.
One standout dish was the slow-cooked braised beef, which was so tender it fell right off the bone. To finish the meal, the matcha crème brûlée was the perfect dessert—balanced, creamy, and not overly sweet.
Service was professional throughout the evening. One small note: cell service inside the restaurant is limited, so be sure to ask for the Wi-Fi password upon arrival.
Overall, this is a place we would happily return to and highly recommend for an elevated and memorable dining experience.

Shockingly terrible communication from Syu.

My fiancée and I made reservations for Syu, one of our favourite Japanese restaurants in Richmond, for Valentine’s Day. We opted for Syu because we needed to dine somewhere that did not have a set course menu so that we could have an early & relatively quick dinner on this important day before moving onto other set plans for the evening. No issues with set course menus at all – we just couldn’t fit it in with how our day was planned as they typically run for 1-3 hours, depending on the restaurant.

We arrived a little early and checked in with the restaurant when we were unexpectedly informed that they would only be serving a set course this day. A huge problem for us, given that we opted to make reservations here specifically because there were no requirements to order the set menu.

The manager defended this by claiming that he had contacted everyone by phone (he didn’t contact us at all) and that they posted an announcement on Instagram (not everyone follows every restaurant they dine at on social media). The manager didn’t sound very apologetic for something that was very clearly his mistake and we left with empty stomachs & a terrible taste in our mouthes from the awful experience. We had to settle for fast food as our Valentine’s Day dinner as nothing else had last minute availability + would allow us to finish dining in time to proceed with our other plans for the evening. What should have been a lovely Valentine’s Day was derailed thanks to the incompetence of Syu. Given how disastrously this was handled, it’s hard to imagine us returning to this restaurant.

Prospective diners beware and, I suppose, make sure to regularly monitor their social media accounts before dining here in case they make unexpected massive changes to their food offerings that are only announced there.

We’ve experienced a lot of Sushi/Sashimi and Japanese’s Tapas restaurants and this place offers some unique items. The “Uni Bomb” was very creative and satisfying. Hotate & Uni Millefeuille was a flavour explosion! Over all, an enjoyable experience.

Very pleasant lunch experience. Servers are polite. Their green tea is very refreshing! Lunch bentos within reasonable price range. Their special bento looks interesting but at higher price with all special items in a small portion!

Had a wonderful family dinner at SYU Sushi Bar and everyone left happy. We were seated at the sushi bar, which made the experience even more special — it’s truly enjoyable watching the chef skillfully prepare each dish right in front of us.

The food was incredibly fresh, and the timing of each course was perfectly paced so nothing felt rushed or delayed. Every bite was a delight, and the warm, attentive service made the evening even better.

Definitely a place we’ll be visiting again — a great spot for both sushi lovers and anyone who appreciates a well-crafted dining experience.

A lovely, well rounded set lunch – the little appetizers and small amount of fruit was the perfect way to start and end my meal. Also, very much appreciated the egg in udon. The food was made with infinite amount of care Their service was top notch as my waitress continuously kept my tea filled.

I’d give a 4.5. We didn’t realize this was a $50-60 per person type of place but the food is reliably good. Other than pricing, the other negative is the hand rolls had smaller and lower quality pieces of fish than the nigiri. They were also out of uni yet charge the same price for all uni dishes

Walkable distance from the Oval. We ordered lunch sets. Very professional chefs and good quality food. However, the floor staff ruined the experience. Blank face greetings. Non responsive waiting tables. They’re lucky the food saved them from a very bad review.

We made a reservation about two weeks ago and only received confirmation yesterday that it had been accepted. When we arrived, we were told that they were serving omakase only, which confused us. The waitress explained that the manager had called everyone to confirm that it would be omakase only for Valentine’s Day. We informed her that we had not received any phone call from the manager.

The waitress apologized, and we explained that we had other plans afterward, so we could not stay for the omakase. She then asked the manager to come out. He stated that he had called everyone and that we should have known from their Instagram that it was omakase only. Not everyone checks Instagram. At the very least, this information should have been posted on the website or included on the reservation page. The manager made it seem as though it was our fault for not checking Instagram. We ended up going nowhere, as there were no openings elsewhere.

The waitress was very kind and apologetic, and she acknowledged that this was meant to be a special day. However, the manager had a poor attitude. I was extremely disappointed because I have had good experiences here before, and this completely ruined my day.

Edit: Wow wasn’t expecting so many ppl to have the same experience. You guys rly need to communicate with customers better.
