We finally decided to try the Writers Room at the Royer after holding off for quite a while because we kept hearing mixed and negative reviews, and I honestly don’t get why. Our experience was excellent.
First off, the restoration of the Royer is just stunning. The whole place is gloriously beautiful, and the Writers Room is absolutely dripping with atmosphere. It feels warm, stylish, and special without feeling stuffy. Even just walking in sets the mood.
Our server, Stephanie, was fantastic. Attentive, friendly, and on top of everything without being intrusive. Truly great service.
The menu is a bit small, but everything we had was delicious and very well prepared. The French onion soup was incredibly flavorful and huge, I could have happily made that my entire meal. The filet was tender and cooked perfectly. The cheesecake was also excellent and a great way to finish the night.
We’ll definitely be back even if it’s just to sit and enjoy the beautifully restored bar for a while. Really glad we gave it a chance.

I recently had the pleasure of trying this speak easy style restaurant and I was not disappointed.
I never heard of the Writers Room before I came. The reason I ended up here was because this lady me and my friend helped move offered us dinner with her family as an addition to our tip.
It was such a long day so I can’t fully remember what we all ordered but I do know that everything was prepared perfectly & the food was delicious. I also loved the cool books that were lined up on each part of the wall which complimented the ambiance in the room.
I would like to thank the male waiter we had, he didn’t miss a beat and really did an exceptional job to make sure we were both comfortable and happy.

Yes, beautiful place, atmosphere was lovely, but it was also so quiet (two tabes including ours) that we were completely neglected all night. My dessert had shards of plastic, I assume from the clamshell packaging the decorative flower came in, and the waiter didn’t comp the dessert or offer me a replacement. He didn’t even seem concerned beyond a “huh, that’s weird.” I sent emails before leaving a review to give them a chance to make it right and I was ignored. So here’s the photos of the plastic. I really hope this place can find some new management and stay open, the history of it is so beautiful and it was a shame to encounter this kind of service on what was supposed to be a fancy night out.

The renovations are gorgeous! Our hostess and manager visited the table to make sure we had a lovely experience. Our server was attentive without hovering. The food was delicious – we ordered the Editor’s Roulade and the Ink & Quill. The portions were smaller than we hoped, but everything was perfectly prepared and plated. The elevated library and posh decor gave a warm and sophisticated atmosphere.
Order the apple cheesecake. It was perfection.

A new favorite place! The food was incredible! We even got to meet chef Terrell when she presented the Napoléon dessert! Oh we will be back!
Oh, our cocktail was delightful, the presentation of the dishes was simply superb. See pictures (though I forgot to take a pic of the Napoléon). Absolutely worth the trip. Worth the detour!
Update: we have now tried all their desserts and they are all 5 stars! The have the best crème brûlée in town, hands down (I used to think Hamilton Walkers had the best, but this is a noticeable step up). And we loved their basque cheesecake! I love the Art Mart one, but again, this one is a noticeable step up! Worth the detour for sure!
And chef Terrell made us feel super special during our anniversary dinner! Thank you! It is always such a pleasure to eat your food!!

A nice, quiet, and quaint spot with delicious food. The unique setting, surrounded by books, makes it especially charming.

Excellent breakfast experience. This restaurant has an old world feel with a modernized touch. Worth a visit. Surprised more people haven’t tried it.

Food is good, not outstanding just decently good relative to the other options in town. Service is okay, not great. Where this place shines is in the atmosphere and look of the restaurant – very pretty and comfortable, and one of the few genuinely nice venues in town. Prices are okay for a fancy-ish dinner, but overpriced for breakfast. Recommended for dinner not for breakfast

The food is amazing, staff very pleasant, but understaffed. Big inconsistency between dinner and breakfast service quality during our hotel stay. Amazing food but the speeds for meals varied vastly. Breakfast food took so much longer than dinner, shockingly! The atmosphere is definitely amazing to look at with the library and books.

I travel to Champaign for work and recently stayed at Hotel Royer-Urbana, and it’s by far the best hotel in the area because of The Writer’s Room. The aesthetic is charming and authentic, and the staff is very friendly. I had a horrible travel experience prior to arrival, and the staff definitely aimed to change my experience. The bartender, Ashley, is exceptional. She’s so friendly, personable, and her customer service is outstanding. The chef is also of exceptional talent – the pasta I had was AMAZING! Highly recommend!
