My first experience at Hot Box. We kept meaning to check it out, but when Cane’s came to town I felt I simply had to go try Hot Box. I live in Athens, and while I love Cane’s (I have positive reviews elsewhere for various Cane’s locations), I really felt bad our local run place might get pushed out.
The tenders are excellent. I would like them to be bigger, but that is true everywhere. Their sauce actually is better than Cane’s, and I don’t say that lightly.
But, the tater tots…yum. takes me over the top. I really enjoyed it, I hope to be back multiple times in the future.

I desperately wanted to like this place and I’m sorry to write a negative review. They’re like David to Raising Cane’s Goliath. Unfortunately, they forgot my soda (no biggie), but the chicken tenders were laughably small. I’m talking three small or two large bites. I paid over $15 to get them, and their individual tenders are over $2 each. I typically don’t write reviews, especially bad ones, but it was incredibly disappointing.

I decided to go to Hot Box Chicken specifically because I got a laugh out of ‘Poop Butt’s review reply. I’m very happy I decided to give it a shot despite the (in my opinion unreasonable) complaints.
This shop simply exudes the vibes of Athens city. It’s NICE here and I don’t say that lightly when it comes to uptown eating. Honestly, the vibes fit with being at OU. I hope the place is here to stay for a long while.
The tenders were (BARELY) smaller because theyre BETTER QUALITY than most chicken fast food places. There was no gristle, the meat was tender and retained moisture, and THE CRUNCH DUDE?! The tenders weren’t even that small?! The food was exceptional. You could tell it was made to order.
With the Big Box combo, you get more food for 2 dollars less than the competitor most people are mentioning here (and the sauce is better ).
Lighting here is harsh if you have sensory issues. The music isn’t loud, but they’ve responded that if there are issues with volume, they’ll adjust it.
All in all, I’d easily pick this over my usual chicken spot. Plus the late hours make this a promising spot for both students and locals.

I don’t eat much fast food but this place is great. The chicken is solid and the sandwiches are tasty. I have to admit that the hotbox seasoned tots are what tip my hand into ordering more than I should. Simple and so damn good.

This place is very “Caney”, if you know what I mean. And I don’t say that to get a Rise out of the owners, but as a compliment. If you are going to rip off…I mean, borrow…I mean, be influenced by, you should pick someone worthy of it (not KFC).
The tenders are noticeably smaller than the place I am referring to, which isn’t necessarily a terrible thing as they make the sandwhich much easier to eat, but I think they need to end up more in the middle, or maybe go with 4 tenders in a sandwhich.
I’m not even going to try the tots as tots in general suck. The fries are good and go well with the sauce, so much so that they should include one and not charge 50c.
There is quite a bit of seating inside, and everything seems new and clean (hope it stays that way).

This was my first time trying Hot Box and I was extremely impressed! The chicken was great (almost the exact same as canes), the sauce was better, and the option for tots really makes the experience. Not only was the food amazing, service was awesome and the restaurant was extremely clean. I will choose this over canes in the future, not only for the food, but also just to support local businesses. Highly recommend!

Was lowkey fiending for canes but this is better bc it’s local! Pleasantly surprised to see it when I came back to athens. Super yummy Texas toast, good wings, good sweet tea. (I’m not really a fries or coleslaw fan in general so I won’t leave my review on those) friendly staff . I recommend snack box for those like me w a small appetite but pic is the hot box

Some of THE BEST chicken I’ve had in this town. Tenders were literally so tender and the polish chicken sandwich….FIRE!! The only thing better than the food, and the reason I gave them a try, the owner supports the community. They are giving people without food (snap) benefits food if they are in need. That alone means they deserve our support as we hold our community together.

The food was good, however, the cashier was extremely rude to the customers. We were waiting for our food and our friends came in with pizza, she yelled that there’s no dining in. They STOPPED eating and set their food down to wait with us and the worker then yells across the room “I SAID NO EATING IN THE DINING AREA!” They literally stopped eating and she still felt the need to scream at everyone in there. Felt like i was going to get yelled at for just breathing. Dining room closed, bathrooms closed, getting screamed at for basically any movement. Would eat again, but after that experience it makes me want to never go back..
