The lady at the register was so kind. She did a wonderful job advising me on some wonderful food.
The owner must be a huge Star Wars fan. I loved the decorations. Vader greats you as soon as you walk in. Tool was on the speakers, great place.
The food was pretty good and you get a lot, which after a little beet could get your taste exhausted, so maybe share what you get with someone else so you get more flavors?
Place is spacious and staff was very welcoming
I ordered the Build Your Own Mac & Cheese with sausage and chorizo, and it was incredible — creamy, spicy, and served in a skillet literally the size of a small pizza. Easily one of the best macs I’ve ever had. My wife got The Chin-Gorilla sandwich (pulled pork, house pimento cheese, grilled pineapple, fried onions, and bacon) and couldn’t believe how good it was.
Huge portions, fast service, and every bite packed with flavor. Definitely one of the best BBQ spots around Lansing — worth every calorie.
The food was good, as always. Unfortunately, the service was one of the worst and most uncomfortable experiences I’ve had at any restaurant.
I am Asian, and the way the waitress treated me felt like clear racial discrimination. From the moment I approached her, there was no smile, no basic courtesy, and a noticeable difference in how I was treated compared to others. Her facial expression made me feel unwelcome, as if I did not belong there or was standing somewhere I shouldn’t be.
Throughout the entire process — ordering, paying, and leaving — there was zero friendliness or professionalism. No smile, no polite interaction, and not even a simple “goodbye” when I left. This was not just bad service; it felt personal and discriminatory.
What makes this even more disappointing is that this restaurant used to be one of my favorite places in the Lansing area. I lived in Lansing for eight years and had visited many times before, and I do not recall ever being treated this way. Experiencing this kind of treatment now, especially as an Asian customer, was shocking and deeply upsetting.
Good food does not excuse racist behavior. Because of this experience, I will not be coming back.
The wall next to us was not clean, gum or something was stuck to it, and the floor wasn’t clean either.
The bathrooms are not for 1 or the other sex’s use, but for anyone. The 1 I was in was in dire need of cleaning because customers don’t care if they hit the trash cans, or put the lids down, There are no toilet seat covers, and I am not fond of having to put my hands on public toilet seats so I can use them after being left up by the previous man who didn’t have manners. I might suggest that they make these male or female, and supply their customers with toilet seat covers, as the majority of their food is eaten with your hands. While on that subject…I appreciated the roll of paper towels at the tables, but some wet naps would certainly be appreciated at the table, maybe set up in some kind of dispenser so they can’t all be touched and contaminated before the next one’s use would be a super convience to both the customers and your staff..cuts down on food, sauce, and grease all over the chairs, walls, bottom of tables, and anything else ppl will touch with their hands.
I needed to wash my hands after I finished half of my brisket with slaw, dried onions, cheese, and “Black Magic” BBQ sauce, ( which I recommend you try. It’s sweet, smoky, and really tasty for those who can’t have spices or heat.)
The brisket was done to perfection!! It was served on a toasted chibatta roll and topped high with meat, yummy coleslaw, cheddar cheese, and dried onions. It was served with either slaw or french fries. The fries are seasoned and mine were extremely greasy, so much so, that I ate only 3 and called it quits, but they did have good flavor. My grandson who is 4, enjoyed chicken nuggets that were breaded all white meat real pieces of chicken, and he did like them, but like me , didn’t eat the fries.
My husband and I both decided we would order just meats that come on a steel tray the next time so we can enjoy the meat flavor without all the bread.
So, in closing… I do highly recommend Meats. The meat and slaw are great! Next time I’ll try to save room for the cheesecake. Service, top notch! We don’t drink, so I can’t comment on the booze, but they do serve Coke products, lemonade, milk, and apple juice for adults and the littles. I usually drink coffee, but felt like soda last night, but I’m sure they probably serve coffee and water upon request. The place needs more attention to cleanliness, but we were there right after the normal dinner rush so that’s maybe a reason, but when we were leaving, and I’d finished washing my hands, I noticed 3 waitresses just standing around gabbing, when they could have been cleaning up the floors, walls, chairs….
Give Meats a try, but don’t wear your Sunday best, no bibs were seen, but lots of paper towels!
I also need to add, my personal take on the satanic references and pictures… I could certainly do without all that negative crap, and thank God didn’t have to explain what that meant to my grandson!! Please take down the 666 goat stuff. Our littles don’t and shouldn’t have to be exposed to your religious beliefs!! We don’t come in blazing the cross or putting statues of Jesus on your tables. Show some respect for your customers who don’t worship the devil please. This would be what stops folks from coming in. The Star Wars stuff is cool, the rock music wasn’t loud or offensive, nor were your adorable dog pics, just not into the devil influences I saw.
