I waited a year to finally have a meal at Crabby Larry’s; the restaurant isn’t convenient to home and whenever we were in the area, the place was closed. I specifically wanted to go on my birthday, but that didn’t work out because they were closed on Tuesdays. Anticipation built the place up until “Crabby Larry’s” was practically a word in my dictionary. Finally, the stars aligned and I got to go last night ….
What a spectacular disappointment.
From the moment I walked in, I knew something was off. The view from the door revealed weary decor and a glimpse of a simple kitchen staffed by one person. It turns out Crabby Larry’s is a small, mom and pop kind of restaurant; the kind of place that depends on the talent and ambition of … Mom and Dad. Mom looked harried in her little kitchen and her son Jesse greeted and waited on us throughout the evening. Service was slow, but Jesse was polite, so I cut him some slack. Especially since he and Mom were the only folks working and there were a fair number of customers.
A trip to the men’s room after ordering revealed a smelly little space behind the kitchen with a busted urinal. The restrooms in general felt like an intrusion on the restaurant’s operations as they were situated between the kitchen and their walk-in freezer. A dark, dusty storage space completed the employees-only feel, and a slight whiff of sewage made me doubt the establishment’s cleanliness. I’ve never seen my seven-year-old boy look disgusted like that.
We ordered “crab balls” as an appetizer as I figured a place with a name like Crabby Larry’s had to have good crab. This was my second mistake … supposedly lightly fried in tempura batter, these little morsels came out dripping in oil. While there were big chunks of crabmeat within, the meat was salty and didn’t taste fresh. A generous slathering of lemon juice and cocktail sauce made them swallowable.
Dinner was served eventually and my baby back ribs, red bliss potatoes, and broccoli looked good. But the seasoning on the ribs was way too bland and the barbecue sauce reminded me of spicy ketchup. They were cooked properly, but they just tasted … boring. I also had a crab cake on the side, and it was much better than the crab balls, but by this point the meal was a lost cause. My wife had swordfish with crab meat topping, and it wasn’t fresh. She shoved it aside without finishing and didn’t even want more than the one rib I had shared with her. The best part of both of our meals was the potatoes.
On the plus side, my boy ordered a hot dog and got two big wieners. He only ate one, but it was a generous serving. While I’ve had better crab meat, I didn’t encounter a single shell fragment. The beers come from microbreweries and they were outstanding. Maybe it was an off day. Maybe they have fresher fish on Fridays. Go for the beers and maybe crab cakes.
Or better yet, go some place else; you’ll pay a lot for a meal that just isn’t worth it.

The atmosphere: B
It’s great, very low key and fun. Palm trees and maritime goodies everywhere. Not too overdone and not too sparse. Well done for a little “hole in the wall”.
The food: B+
It was great, especially since it is really the only seafood place in the area save for red lobster. It was very fresh, nice and hot, and wonderfully seasoned though I thought there was a bit too much sherry in the she crab soup.
The price is alright again taking into consideration that it’s almost the only seafood place around. For the quality I didn’t mind paying the average $20 for a plate.

STELLAR! Attentive with out being overbearing, friendly confidant and knowledgeable.
Beer: B
They brew their own beer there and since I was pregnant when I went I couldn’t try it… BUT it sounded like a great selection and I’ve heard good things. Downside is that they dont have much outside of their own stuff but im sure it would please most!
Overall: B+
I will absolutely be recommending this place. There is also a bar area with a tv for sports but I would by no means call this a sports bar. Though I could envision my husband and I sitting at the bar drinking beer snacking on the appetizers and watching the Phillies (watching them lose apparently).

Always great service, great food and great times. Also my next door neighbor and they’ve retired. TheY finally got to retire and enjoy all the years of hard work. We miss them when they are traveling the country and we are still working out 9 to 5s
