Saint Laz is an awesome bar at a great location right next to the Girard station underneath the L, you can tell from the pictures that the lighting creates a chill and mysterious ambiance. The service is great and it brings in a friendly crowd. Not sure if it’s every Monday but I believe many Mondays have comedy shows.

After reading a few reviews, I checked this place out at around 10PMish on a Friday evening, and was taken back that there was a $10 cover charge to enter. While I didn’t see this in any of the reviews, I also observed that the cover was only applied to specific (new?) people, I casually saw at least a dozen people get in without paying the cover.
I likely wouldn’t have minded, and actually the food and the personalized service of the upstairs bartender, and the restauranteur were the best part of the night. I ordered based off of previous reviews, and the mac & cheese was SUPER rich and creamy, and the pulled BBQ sandwich had a good balance of smoky sweet and tangy from the slaw.
The crowd skewed younger, hip hop vibes, and the DJ was meh— I miss when DJ’s actually were creative and mixed music intentionally and thoughtfully instead of being a glorified Spotify playlist.
I also noticed that the owner of the establishment sat and “supervised” the event as if these were rowdy children, him and the downstairs bartenders behavior and attitude non-verbally communicated a disposition of tolerating the “urban” crowd more than welcoming and embracing them. That was certainly a turn off.
I must note however, there is some very eclectic Afro and indigenous themed vintage artwork and posters (attached), vignettes, shrines and other offbeat interiors that add an esoteric galactic neon hued ambiance.
By 12AM the place was maybe 40% at capacity, yet they had stanchions setup outside as if preparing for a massive wave of people- was it worth the cover charge, for me no. Would I go again? Maybe on another night when there isn’t one.

One of my favorite dives in Philly.
Very cool interior, good prices (and very good specials when they have them), always great bartenders.
Had dollar wings special and two dollar beers during the Eagles game. Wings were surprisingly terrific, especially for a dive.
Great people watching too on a busy intersection when the door is propped open.

The staff here rules. The DJ ruled (shout out HBK!). The environment is lively, mysterious, and full of good cheap drinks. Anywhere you look, you’ll find an interesting piece of art work while you shake your rump. Just go and have a great time!

Tuesday and Saturday was the greatest nights I have had in a long time. The bartenders were so nice and attentive! Drinks are great and the food is even better. Give it a try you won’t be disappointed.

And they had bbq from the fly cafe EsCafe located on American and Jefferson

This establishment deserves a higher rating than google would allow. The Saint is a staple of the Philadelphia community & embodies what Philly is all about. From its under-the-El location, to its metaphysical aesthetics, to the attentive & friendly staff to the top notch DJ’S & (most importantly) the crowd, this place is where it’s at. If you’re from out of town (or local & curious), stop in later on a Tuesday night or roll in Thursday-Saturday for a serious vibe, you won’t be disappointed.
