I liked the vibe, interesting menu, the free jukebox, local folks gathering. The food was good, not great. Seemed like a popular neighborhood hub. I appreciated the sense of comfort. Faux guacamole, Lipton Spanish rice. Liked the tostadas and crispy tacos. Place was kept clean.

It’s the same place that I used to come to eat when we moved into that neighborhood in 1976. I do have a “preferred name”, yet this is the place! I always have the queso when I visit Topeka.

This place is still amazing. The food is spectacular and well worth the drive of 264 miles. The prices are very reasonable. The facility is old and could use some updating but that great taste is still there.

Amazing food! Great service and the same old hometown spot we all love. Nacho platter is my all-time favorite with the bean tostada on the side 100% perfection.

Awesome local place to eat. The employees are wonderful. And if you don’t like tomatoes like I do lol remember to say NO tomatoes. I already made that mistake. Anyway I recommend going to here if you want to get something good food at a nice local place.

I’ve been going here for years and the food never disappoints. However, I gave three stars because the wait times seem to be getting worse. I went in this evening around 7:00 p.m., ordered two taco burgers, two tacos, a queso, and a drink, to go, and I walked out at 8:00 p.m. When I entered, they were on number 44. My number was 53.

We arrived at Taco Al’s at 2 o’clock, well past the lunch crowd. Our order was number 31, and we were quite disappointed to realize they were only on number 18. I ordered the nachos, which didn’t taste bad, but they were definitely not Mexican food—not even Tex-Mex. The best comparison I can make is saying SpaghettiOs are Italian.
The lady taking orders was the most unfriendly person I’ve encountered in this line of business. It was clear she did not want to be there or deal with the public. They should let one of the younger, happier workers greet people.
It was cold outside, and while we were eating, a homeless person came in, evidently known in that place. In a small town like Topeka, I would think they would offer a cup of coffee or at least respite from the cold for 20 minutes. Instead, they immediately asked her to leave and discussed loudly enough for customers to hear about checking the side door and making sure she wasn’t loitering in the back of the building out of the wind.
I gave the meal two stars only because it was edible and not terrible. The unfriendly environment, however, gets a big fat zero.

My husband favourite taco place when he’s back to Topeka. Small little restaurant that serves really fresh made tacos!

Great lil out of the way mom and pop shop with friendly service every time! Whether your taking your food on the go or staying in their cozy dinning area our family loves this place! You may get lucky and run into the original Taco AL himself! If not at least his daughter Julie should be behind the counter slinging tacos to perfection!
