The Sussex Tavern was a perfect “third space” for me and my friends. We had gotten brunch together elsewhere, and wanted a different place to hang out and talk for a while. I suggested going into town to the tavern without alluding to the nature of this venue.
Despite my friends’ initial shock of this hole in the wall, they eagerly listened to the history behind the building provided by the volunteers. We also enjoyed the variety of period drinks and were really into a few of them enough to become interested in taking some recipes home.
The building itself is fascinating to look at, and there’s a good handful of items around and informational reading. I can’t say enough good things about our experience here!

Only colonial establishment whose bartender will sings sea shanties, with the boys, and your serve a sailor’s daily ration of grog! Ain’t no other spot for such. Capt Jack Aubrey would love this joint.
