Here’s what you should know before visiting San Jose Mexican Restaurant.
Located in downtown Webster Groves near the train tracks, this spot was quiet on a Monday night with easy parking — as long as you don’t miss the small garage entrance.
The food had great flavor, the fajitas came out sizzling with plenty of veggies, and the chips and salsa were hot, thin, and crispy. The margarita was very citrus-forward, and while the rice was a bit dry, the beans and sides were solid.
One note: the front booths are very small, so if you want more space, I’d recommend asking for a table.
Overall, a good option if you’re in the area and know what to expect.

Our first and, likely, last time trying San Jose Mexican Restaurant, located in the heart of Webster Groves. We were at an appointment in the area and wanted something to eat.
Sadly, Nothing was impressive here.
The entire place has a dank, musty smell, ESPECIALLY the entryway and bathrooms. The service was subpar. Our server, a man with long hair, took our order and then disappeared. We had to just leave cash because we were never given a bill.
The food wasn’t terrible. The Chips & Salsa was decent— the chips were a tad stale but the salsa was nice and spicy. My Taco & Enchilada was alright. The taco shell tasted store-bought. My Mom said her chicken dish was “nothing remarkable”.
If the service and atmosphere were better, we’d actually come back. We weren’t expecting amazing, super authentic Mexican food… but the least we could get was some service.

I absolutely love coming here. The Mrs. and I are regulars. We choose this location over the Crestwood location for consistency and atmosphere.

Tried this place for the first time for lunch. The staff seemed friendly and there was plenty of open seating indoor & outside. The margaritas were good and had me feeling great after. I had the beef nachos, which were ok. The beef was not seasoned, nor was the grease drained from the meat before pouring over the nachos. I was disappointed there was no sour cream, lettuce, or pico on the nachos.

My family was excited to try San José in Webster, especially since the Crestwood location is fantastic. However, this location fell short of our expectations. The chips and salsa were delicious, but our actual meals were disappointing. Both my tamale and chicken enchilada were extremely mushy, cold, and had a sauce that tasted like it was canned. My child’s chicken quesadilla was dripping with grease and almost inedible. The service was also mediocre. It took at least 5-10 minutes for the staff to acknowledge our presence, even though it wasn’t that busy. I do not like writing negative reviews, but we were simply disappointed with our experience.

Staff was immediately friendly at prompt. We rarely post bad reviews. We ordered one “quality” Margarita to share and both of us tasted it and it was so off. Maybe rancid. Respectfully asked for something different and the manager or owner came over and told us he heard us say “house margarita” . We asked for quality not house. Had to ask multiple times and someone finally told was his name was named “Jose”. Immediately was snarky and argumentative and told us that he heard us order a house margarita and said they have been serving it to people it all day We didn’t want an argument. Just a better drink and would have paid for it. Instead we had attitude and the bartenders started going in back laughing at as if they knew how bad it was. We have pictures. Something was very wrong with their drinks they knew it. We said never mind”. So much better service at other locations. We were turned off. No one would give us the name of the manager except one person who said Jose. Strongly recommend other options nearby. We won’t be back. When we left we have pictures of the staff laughing at how bad it was. Don’t eat or drink here. Sad

I got spinach enchiladas and they were good! A fairly long wait but they were real busy.

This place has fantastic flavors in all of their food. The staff is polite and knowledgeable. One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in STL.

I got a raspberry margarita…. So good! And I did the pick three with Chile relleno, Verde chicken enchilada and a beef taco. Food is great and nice portion. Also I liked that there was outside seating. I will be back.

Stopped in after a morning at Grant’s Farm. The decorations are great and there is a lot of room inside. My daughter said her food was good but I ordered the Tacos Al Pastor and the meat was very dry and some of the pieces were tough like jerky. Our waitress was nice but I wasn’t impressed.
