The only critique we had was that it felt like we were being served by too many people. We were offered dessert by a different server and then at the end we were brought the wrong check by someone who wasn’t our server. We also had to wait quite a while before someone came to take our payment. Aside from this, everyone was very kind and friendly and the atmosphere was very cozy. We would definitely come back!
I had no problem making a reservation for 3 at 6pm. When we arrived, we were promptly and kindly seated. The interior of the restaurant is thoughtfully laid out and tastefully designed/decorated. I loved that the lighting was on the dimmer side, but that the kitchen and prep areas were well lit. It created a lovely ambiance, and felt very sensory-friendly.
We had Wendy as our waitress. She was very kind, attentive, and helpful throughout our meal. She even went to grab the bartender for us when we had a question about the sake that she was unable to answer. We appreciated all of the staff, as they were very sweet and seemed to work well together as a team. Wendy was awesome and we hope to have her as our waitress again when we come back!
The food was absolutely INCREDIBLE. I have truly never had better sushi in North Carolina than at Uglyfish. The cuts were delectable and fresh. The plating was gorgeous. And I loved that the menu was focused and not too overwhelming. I think sometimes sushi restaurants pack their menu with too many items and then their quality is diminished as a result. This place does the opposite. The menu is on the smaller side, but I cannot imagine anything being subpar here.
Between the 3 of us, we got 6 rolls. My personal favorite was the Spicy Tuna. Additionally, we tried a bottle of sake recommended to us by the bartender. A 500ml was perfect to split between two and it was wonderful. All in all, we paid around $150 with the tip and we all agreed it was well worth it.
If you’re looking for a fancy sushi experience without having to pay up the wazoo, this is your place. A total hidden gem that I selfishly hope stays hidden so I can keep going here over and over without delay or interruption!
Thank you so much for making Uglyfish our new favorite sushi spot!
Highly recommend any of the nigiri, but the toro/fatty tuna is a must get. And don’t forget to explore the specials too. Every single piece of fish tasted extremely fresh and was beautifully presented. The lychee mai tai and calamansi margarita were delicious and refreshing. For dessert, their flan was the perfect way to round out the meal. Couldn’t have asked for a better birthday dinner. Definitely planning on coming back!
The crudos were excellent across the board, and the nigiri was spot on—especially the yellowtail and salmon belly. The karaage chicken was super crispy and really tasty. The ambience was also very nice and added to the experience.
The only downside for us was the rolls. We ordered three different ones and unfortunately none really impressed. They tended to fall apart and overall just weren’t to our liking.
Hoping they continue to refine and improve the roll program, because everything else was strong and well executed.
