Went for 2nd time the wait after ordering was 50 mins at the end of the night. Would have been longer had we not waved down the waitress to ask what happened to the meals. Few minutes later the food finally arrived. 3 meals the hamberg was supposed to be cooked medium but it was very rare.it was sent back and still when returned rare. So our guest refused to pay. My fish was so over cooked you had to saw at it to cut a piece with a knife and still it was difficult to cut through. The other meal was excellent. The restaurant only had a headful of customers. So this kind of wait and did not seem warrented. It also seemed that regular customers were getting their meals in a timely manner. Needless to say I do not believe we will be returning. It is a pity. We’ll we gave it 1 more chance and we have to say they h ave made some changes and everything was excellent.
I felt the portions were representative of the price paid. Although the outdoor seating did not provide any lake views, the seating was adequate and it was nice to enjoy the Maine morning sun.
If you’re in the Belgrade area I would recommend a visit to Sunset Grill. I will make another visit during dinner lunch as I am looking forward to trying some of their homemade pie.
The menu items are a step up from fast food, and Pam (my server) did a fine one-woman lunch time service in Maine. (Maine struggles with finding enough employees in most restaurants & businesses . . . older demographic trends folks) I liked my fish chowder, not as top notch as restaurants along Maine’s coast. The soft pretzels were from a box, but it was soft & hot . . . I hope they kick their beer cheese & mustard into gear . . . rather bland? I liked the Cushnoc Porter, good mix of Maine beers! Then I topped off my lunch with a piece of strawberry/rhubarb pie & pecan pie , both homemade and both very good! (Took the pieces of pie home to share with my wife) The desserts pulled Sunset Grill’s rating up to 4 stars! The Sunset Grill offers a small bar area, outside deck seating, and occasionally live music, I’m told.
I can’t help but imagine the “glory days” of the early 1900’s of Moosehead Lake or Belgrade . . . You would stay either at a summer cottage or the large grand hotels! Possibly come up by train, arrive at the RR Depot, and have your luggage escorted over to your hotel room. You’d enjoy a fancy meal in a large dinning room, most likely listening to music from a hired band, and dancing into the night!
Times are a-changing . . .
Across the street from the Sunset Grill is a park with a gazebo, probably for those summer concerts. Hopefully those bands will return as we move beyond the Covid era?
