For appetizers we got the pickle fries and Reuben balls. There were a lot of pickle fries. Menu says it is served with ranch but the sauce was not a regular ranch. It may have been a buffalo ranch or other spicy ranch. The pickle fries were good and we would definitely get them again but we would ask that it be served with regular ranch. The Reuben balls were nothing special and we would not order again.
The entrees took awhile to come out then everyone’s was brought out except my Hühnerschnitzel which took at least another 5 minutes if not longer to get. The portion sizes are large. It is hard to cut up meat when it is piled on top of other food so it would have been nice to have it plated separately. A couple of us did ask for another plate.
Spätzle is my favorite side dish to get at German restaurants. Sadly I thought it was a bit lacking in flavor and it had very dry and very chewy pieces mixed in.
The potatoes were very good.
The grilled chicken sandwich would have been better if served on a different sized bun. My daughter had to cut the chicken in half and stack it in order to eat it as a sandwich.
I only ate the smaller piece of my hühnerschitzel and took the larger piece home. It was very crispy but was a bit dry and chewy around the edges. I thought the gravy was on the salty side. I have been watching my sodium intake so that could be a contributing factor as to why it was salty to me.
Everyone seemed to enjoy their food. My sister-in-law got the red cabbage as a side dish. She never had red cabbage before so she has nothing to compare it to but she did not like it. She took half her jägerschnitzel for leftovers because the piece was huge. Four out of six of us had leftovers.
I would definitely come again.
One suggestion for the website: change it so the menu is easier to read. When trying to read the first page, it only stays for a few seconds then moves to the second page and then the second page stays for a few seconds and then goes to a blank screen. It makes it hard to read. I want to be able to swipe to the next page when I’m ready.
I had a drink while I waited for my order. It was okay, bit watered down. The order came quickly.
Most of the food was fine, just not very flavorful or interesting The potato salad was the first offender. It was basically just huge chunks of potato (not pictured, I had eaten before taking the photo) with all of the ingredients sort of piled on. This cost $5 for this mess. A far cry from quality potato salads at places like Schmidt’s in Columbus.
Arriving at the grounds you aren’t sure if it’s a private camp or a German alcove but follow the road all the way to the back and look for the signs. The area is similar to what I’d imagine a rustic village would be in Germany. Simple buildings and interesting decor.
The meal was excellent. Probably the best meal Ive had in Toledo.
My party was greeted promptly and given the option to sit outside or inside. The inside was fantastically decorated but we chose outside. Basic glass tables, chairs, and umbrellas. Definitely set up for the more heavy drinking crowd. But perfect for the day. A nice breezy warm afternoon with just the right amount of shade from the trees.
We ordered drinks and a sausage sampler to split. There were 3 types of sausage. Knockwurst, weisswurst, and one other. All 3 were grilled with just the right amount of char but not enough to ruin the flavor.
For our main course I chose the jagerschnitzel, spatzel, and German potato salad. It was all fantastic. The gravy on my schnitzel was a good balance of tart and savory. The schnitzel itself was browned perfectly.
For dessert I had the carrot cake. Not too sweet not overly spiced. The icing was that good mixture of cream cheese and sugar so that it balanced the sweetness. My fellow diners had the German chocolate cake but I tried to warm them that German chocolate cake is almost more of a coloring agent than a flavor. They were expecting more like an American chocolate cake that’s so sugary you can only take two bites.
Overall it was probably the best place I’ve eaten at in Toledo and will definitely be back any chance I get.
