mostly controlled chaos sushi bar. sushi is prepared fast, maybe too fast. lots of energy and loud environment. service was never far away, but server knocked over my sake when refilling water 🙁 no outdoor seating.

Superb service, average food. Honestly, probably a 3.5/5, but we rounded up rather than down.

We’ve been to our fair share of sushi spots and were excited to try this one. The building and atmosphere are quaint, modern, and clean. We especially enjoyed that they offered an Omakase — a unique dish curated entirely by the chef. We also ordered hot sake, three sushi rolls (Kuro, Dragon, and Rainbow), and a fried cheesecake. The presentation was beautiful across the board. However, we felt that everything overall was a bit bland — not as flavorful or exciting as we had hoped. Also, not a fan of oversized rolls that can’t be eaten in one bite, which was the case with the Kuro. We wish that it was more the size of the other two.

Absolutely phenomenal! Every bite was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The atmosphere had a cozy, modern vibe, and the staff were welcoming and attentive, enhancing our experience. Trying Kuro was the best decision we made during our trip to New Orleans. Would definitely recommend!

Everything was amazing!! Tim (Hui) was absolutely fantastic. As a restaurant owner that deals with raw fish, his knife skills and customer service were fantastic. Definitely recommend, we tried a little of everything.

Very nice place for Omakase style sushi. I know their top chef recently left so I don’t know if food will continue to be the same since my last visit.

Place is cute, has a good vibe, and sushi bar is Japanese style oak counter where you can see the chef preparing all the sushi.

The plate in the picture was $70. It is a very good deal considering the quality of the fish.

Great little sushi shop in the Garden District. Wonderful sushi and sashimi options. Our waitress was very nice and helpful in helping us select from the menu as well as off menu items that sushi chef made specially for us. The wagyu foiegra melts in you mouth. So good we got 4 orders. Lol. Highly recommend their omakashe selection. Go here for nice quite break from the FQ.

2/5 Stars – Just Not It, Chief.

Alright, y’all, I’ve been to my fair share of sushi spots, so when my sister mentioned Kuro Sushi, I figured, why not? Seemed like a decent spot to take my partner for their birthday dinner. We pulled up, ready to feast, hoping for a sushi experience that’d knock our socks off. Instead? More like a light tap on the shoulder–forgettable and kinda disappointing.

We kicked things off with three appetizers: carpaccio, fried calamari, and seaweed salad. The carpaccio? Standard. Nothing to write home about, nothing to get excited over. Just… there. The calamari? Again, fine. No crunch that made me wanna do a happy dance, but it got the job done. Seaweed salad? Same story. Decent, but I could’ve gotten the same at any generic sushi joint.

Now, let’s talk sushi. We ordered salmon belly, toro, BBQ eel, halibut, and uni. I had hopes. I had dreams. And they were all crushed one bite at a time.
* Salmon belly – Fine. Standard. Came with chili garlic oil, which I’ve seen a million times before. Not impressed.
* Halibut – Tasted clean, but forgettable. Wouldn’t order it again.
* Toro – Meh. Nothing special. Also, the knife work? A little rough. Looked like it got handled by someone in a rush.
* BBQ eel – Lukewarm. Didn’t feel fresh. And if I’m eating eel, I want that fresh, slightly charred warmth. Disappointing.
* Uni – This one hurt. I love uni when it’s done right, and I’ve had my fair share. But this? NOPE. The second I caught that fishy, salty smell, I knew it wasn’t gonna sit right with me. And when I tasted it? Yeah… I literally spat it out. No thank you.

Overall? Kuro Sushi isn’t the worst, but it’s definitely not making my must-return list. With so many sushi spots out there, I need something that stands out, and this just wasn’t it. If I’m craving good sushi, I’d rather go to Yakuza House or Daiwa, where I know I’m getting quality.

Would I recommend this place? Not really. Maybe if someone else is paying, but even then… I’d hesitate.

We had the BEST Valentine’s Day dinner here. Good sake, omakase that was endlessly creative, and friendly service. We requested (in total) 26 unique pieces of sushi for omakase, and we watched as each one was made with care! I’m so happy to see this space alive again with very experienced chefs/staff and delicious food.

Full stop @ Kuro Sushi Bar when Uptown. Hello FRESH! I’m a sashimi aficionado and Kuro satisfies my quest for perfection when it comes to a sushi restaurant. I love the space– intimate yet welcoming–the Kuro team of servers and chefs are spectacular. I’m so grateful that a delicious, much-needed, and Asian-owned sushi restaurant opened in my neighborhood for all of us to enjoy. Chefs Tommy and Chef Tim will delight you with their creative omakase dishes or the classic rolls that we all know & love. Kuro is waiting for y’all and it won’t disappoint; trust me, I ordered the carpaccio back 2 back, it’s too good. You’re welcome…
