I’ve read some disparaging reviews here about El Sarape. I’ve been coming for about 10 years and all I can say is: Sit at the bar, enjoy some chips and salsa with a house-made margarita, then switch maybe to Negra Modelo and order a (fairly priced!) enchilada combinación splitting between verde and mole. (I get refried-only for the side ) Chat with beautiful Maya and enjoy the neighborhood vibe with the gathering locals. Disfrute de su comida!

The young host was absolutely amazing! Waitress was absolutely awful and food was old and disgusting!
1. I support all local small businesses! 2. The young man when I entered was professional and friendly ( Hard worker) 2 the place was empty. Waitress was rushy and rude. Sooo slow too busy talking to the bartender. My food looked, smelt and tasted disgusting. It definitely was not fresh. My husband’s rice was so dry and the beans he didn’t touch. They look like they was sitting for hours.
Only thing we enjoyed was the salsa and chips . As my husband was eating she took it away and my husband said something. She admitted she should have asked!
I took one bite and spit it out. Had my husband try and he even stated the meat was not good !
We ended up going to UNO MAS next door and omg it was absolutely amazing!!!! Definitely will be going back to UNO Mas! Also Ocho Cafe is absolutely amazing too!

This was our first time there and we came to celebrate my birthday. We expected a nice happy athmosphere and a bright beautiful interior, which usually Mexican restaurants are famous about… The walls are GREY and the overall look is very sad… just look at my pictures. Also, weird narrow tables where you cant properly fit plates. Didn’t feel clean…
When we stepped in, we had to stand right in the middle of the dining room, not knowing what to do and there was no host in sight. There were about 5-6 waitresses, as a group in front of us, but no one greeted us or even looked at us. After about 5-7 minutes I got very frustrated and was ready to leave. At that time someone came and just asked how many people – no greeting, no smile.
We got a table next to a large group of people. As I said, the tables are very narrow and small. Also, the set up of the room is very uncomfortable. You basically are forced to sit in a straight line with all other clients, way too close to other groups (about 1 foot) – uncomfortable to talk and very uncomfortable for the time of covid… it’s strange, as the restaurant was only half busy at the time (Saturday at 6:30 pm). The main TV in the room was off, but there was a working TV right above our table and half of the room was staring at our side all the time, watching the TV and of course us, too. What a weird set up
The waitress was ok, but didnt introduce herself and dropped a few things on the floor (a part of our food and our mask) ♀️ Service was slower than it should be…
Food… in general, it was enjoyable. However, enchilada with chicken had NO TASTE at all, no any vegetables included, no guacamole, very very plain. Tacos with fish and tacos with beef were not bad, but had incredibly spicy sauce at the bottom that ruined it. The chips were cold and the sauce was not good.
I had a grilled sirloin with a sausage, enchilada, rice and beans. Meat was not soft at all, so I couldn’t finish more than a half, but the rest of the dish was good.
Strange experience over all… we will not be back.

We came in at 8:50 on a Thursday night for a quick dinner and they came through. We ordered by 9:05, and had the food on the table by 9:15. The chips and salsa were good, the chips were thick and the salsa had plenty of onion.
I had camarones Javier which was an interesting dish, but delicious. The refried beans were interesting, I didn’t love them, but my partner did appreciate them. He ordered enchiladas that he said were okay, nothing remarkable.
We will be coming back because of the convenience of a quick meal.

Really hate to leave bad reviews but this all started out bad from the start. I tried calling and the phone just kept giving a busy signal. So i drove there, its not that they were busy, they just left the phone off the hook so they dont have to answer it. I placed an order for a burrito, they had someone playing live music, kinda cool but its a tiny place and the guy had huge speakers blasting for an acoustic guitar that you could have heard if he had no speakers at all, thankfully I wasn’t eating inside or that would have been annoying. I got my burrito and it was basically deconstructed they just rolled ground beef into a soggy cheese covered tortilla and then give you refried beans and rice on the side. They should definitely google what a burrito is because this definitely isnt it. I used the tortilla chips they gave me and basically made a nacho dip out of this mess and tossed the soggy tortilla. The salsa they provided for the chips was good though. If they learned that the rice and beans go in the burrito and melted American cheese doesnt go on the tortilla this place might stay in business. A burrito shouldn’t need a fork and knife but if that’s how you’re going to serve it, maybe provide a fork and knife with the take out order, luckily I had some utensils in the car or I wouldn’t even been able to eat this.

This place is horrible. Service is slow despite not being busy. Food is horrible. Queso looks like this? The beans looks like they’ve been sitting there for an hour on the plate just waiting to be put out of it’s misery. Don’t get the guacamole. $8 for two little scoops. How does this place have a 4 star?

Been going here for over 20 years, food is good, atmosphere never really changes/comfortable but the best thing here were their Margaritas, especially their Pepparitas. Unfortunately on my last visit last week, the Margarita was very disappointing, weak, tasted like lime juice and soda. Re thinking my Mexican restaurant selection.

I’ve been coming to El Sarape for years as I grew up in the area. Once I moved away & became vegan I was in anticipation to see how it would be to eat here and let me just say, I’m blown away!!! The drinks are excellent (as always) and the food was delicious! Lots of vegetarian options that can easily be made vegan. Staff was friendly and helpful and I really enjoy the recent addition of outdoor seats! Definitely come here for a great night! And dear El Sarape, I love you, please make your rice vegetarian/vegan friendly!! 🙂

By far the worst food I’ve ever had in a sit down restaurant. To start, our silverware was still dirty. Our server kindly replaced them with clean ones. I got the beef and potato casserole, and the beef was like leather. It also wasn’t anything resembling a casserole, just pieces of tough beef in black sauce. My friend got a chicken dish that was swimming in oily water topped with a glob of barely melted cheese. The chicken was also like rubber. The chips and salsa were great, and our server Rachel was a sweetheart. The manager was also really understanding and comped the whole meal. Overall, the service was fantastic but the cooks probably need to be re trained.

The service was fine but the food was uninspiring. Ordered 2 meals. The chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce plate was OK if you like a more sour and slightly spicy sauce. The 2nd entree was chicken with potatoes and a poblano spinach sauce. When the dish arrived the general impression was that it had the look and texture of spinach baby food, literally unable to see any of the chicken or potatoes on the dish since it was buried under a blenderized dark green sauce There was a faint spinach flavor otherwise unable to distinguish other ingredients of the dish due to the sauce. Would recommend that the restaurant create another dish with spinach, chicken and potatoes that can be enjoyed as spinach does go well with chicken and potatoes. The presentation of the dish was definitely poor. There wasn’t a picture of the dish on the menu that would give the customer and idea of what to expect. Unfortunately not worth the price of the meal in this case.
