After learning this place has been on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, my wife and I had to check this place out. It serves old fashioned Texas home style comfort food. It is a family owned restaurant that has been passed down through generations since 1938. We went on a Sunday afternoon, and even though it has a small dining area, we did not have to wait for a table. They also have counter seating. We had the chicken fried steak and chicken fingers. The chicken fried steak was little thin but the portion was large. The crust was nice and crispy and flavorful. The chicken fingers also were a large portion and nice and crispy. We were disappointed they were out of the chicken fried chicken, which we originally tried to order. They were also out of all pies, which we would have to try. I guess we’ll have to come back.

Went on a Friday night, they had the special for fried catfish, a lot of people were ordering that,
I had the chciken fried chicken, and I would say it’s the best I have had with two sides, mashed potatoes and Mac & cheese.
The service was a bit slow it was a full house and I think they only had two waiters. One runner and a cleaner.

Food was incredible, my meal was about 17 bucks with tea. I will definitely come back again.

I remember my dad driving past this place when I was a kid (40yrs ago). I was always curious, well my wife and I finally stopped for a bite. I had the Ribeye and my wife the fish. Everything was delicious and the fried mushrooms were excellent. The atmosphere reminded me of years past. Wonderful restaurant.

This is a San Antonio legend. Yet I’ve never eaten here but I know why it’s so highly rated. First, it’s like stepping backwards in time! I’m not sure they’ve changed their decor in 40 years down to the booths and counter seating. Gloria took our order without writing a thing down. You won’t find that in your every day restaurant, ever. I ordered the Jalapeño mushroom cheeseburger. Amazing! Their fries are crispy too perfection. They even have a “jukebox” at some booths.

Haven’t been here in about 25 years and it’s exactly what it used to be! Food was absolutely DELICIOUS, prices were obviously higher than they used to be but still really cheap considering how good the food is and how big the portions are! It’s still the diner that makes you feel right at home! Would absolutely recommend!

Glad I was able to try this legendary local restaurant. The atmosphere is great, very welcoming – yes, I was greeting with a booming “WELCOME” as soon as I walked in. Extremely friendly server – forgot his name, but he’s a rocker! Great homestyle favorites on the menu. I had to try the chicken fried steak. It was good, but not “the one” I’ve been searching for… but better than most. Try it! I’d like to return to try other menu items and just enjoy the very homey, old-fashioned atmosphere!

My sister and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at Tip Top Cafe, today.
Our server, Heather, helped us find some tasty choices on the menu. For appetizers, we tried the fried mushrooms, prepared perfectly, and thick, fried onion rings, crispy not greasy. My sister had the Swiss mushroom burger, I had the chicken fried steak. Our food was hot ,delicious, ample servings and Heather continued to check on us throughout the meal..Great Oldies atmosphere and a pleasant place to try. I highly recommend the chicken fried steak! Five Stars! ( Sorry! We forgot pictures!).

Best chicken fried steak I’ve had in a long time…and big. Nice flavorful coating, not thick crust, good gravy. Looks like a hole in the wall from outside, nice, comfortable inside. Great service too.

I was told this place had the biggest and best chicken fried steaks in SA so I tried them out. Passed it a few times because it doesn’t look like a restaurant but more like a bar painted solid red.
Once inside it did feel more like a small ma and pa type diner. The server was quite friendly but only filled our drinks once the entire time we were there.
When our food arrived, my plate came to me with a thin but massively huge chicken fried steak served ONTOP of a small puddle of dark yellow gravy, a big scoop of potatoes but with a lot of skins mixed in“ unlike how they are pictured in menu” and green beans with a roll.
The steak’s breading just tasted bleh like unseasoned cornmeal…. It was very large though, hanging off the sides of my plate and it covered the small puddle of dark yellow gravy underneath it. I usually preferred to have the gravy over the steak instead of under it but after tasting the gravy I was glad it wasn’t covering it.
The dark yellow gravy tasted odd and tangy unlike a traditional white pepper gravy typically served over chicken fried steak.
The potatoes were very thick and clumpy and full of so many skins & eyes that I had to keep picking them out of my teeth. The beans were ok.
Over all the food didn’t live up to the hype and I probably wouldn’t come back or recommend this place. The entire experience just fell short.

Our waitress was super friendly and attentive without being annoying. I understand it is an old-school dinner, but the place needs a coat of paint. Several of the benches have ripped upholstery. We had the onion rings as an appetizer, and it was a large serving nicely breaded. We loved them. The salad was a bag salad that was as fresh as we would like. They make their own dressings, and the blue cheese dressing was delicious. The chicken fried steak was huge, and my fried okra was perfect. We enjoyed our lunch and would go back.
