I’ve been coming to this LOCAL spot for years, and the quality has always been consistently excellent. The hardest part is deciding what to order because there are so many tempting options. I haven’t tried their bread yet, but every pastry and croissant I’ve had has been delicious. Their baked goods change frequently, which makes each visit feel like a pleasant surprise. On weekends, they also set up a crêpe station outside. Seating is outdoor only.

The French Oven serves up delicious pastries, baguettes, crepes, and other traditional items in a quaint Scripps Ranch neighborhood mall. The baking is top-tier, even if the service can get overwhelmed.

THE BAKED GOODS
Brioche Loaf: A hit with the kids and adults! The golden crust gave way to a soft, sweet, and moist crumb. It went fast.

Croissants: The Almond Croissant was a treat, with marzipan bringing added moisture to every bite. The Curry Chicken Salad Croissant was also excellent, with a rich, savory filling.

Croque Madame: Excellent. Melted cheese on fresh-baked bread topped with a lovely sunny-side-up egg.

Desserts: The slice of Chocolate Royal was decadent (rich, mousse-like cake with a crunchy crust), and the Chocolate Eclair was enormous and generously filled.

LOGISTICS & TIPS
• Weekend Exclusives: Note that items like the Brioche, Sourdough, and Croque Madame are generally only available Friday–Sunday. Beignets are usually Saturday–Sunday only.

• Parking: The lot is small and can be chaotic due to the bakery’s popularity.

• Service: During the morning rush, the counter can get a bit disorganized (we had a slight delay with our hot food and a mix-up with the order), so just be patient and check your receipt!

OVERALL
A fantastic neighborhood bakery bringing tasty French baked goods to San Diego. Worth the trip for the pastries alone.

First time here, really enjoyed the pastries and other offerings. Loopoong line, but it went pretty fast. Highly recommend almond croissant and chicken pot pie. Bread pudding was good, but not sure I’d get it again because there are so many amazing options to try next time.

Can’t wait to return, 5/5

Such a local gem! This place is amazing. Fresh pastries, bread, and coffee. Fairly priced, fresh, homemade, and very delicious. Ordered the blueberry danish, savory danish, and chocolate croissant. The pastry they use is so flaky and buttery. To be honest, probably one of the best in San Diego. Better than a lot of the hip new places closer to the city.

Coffee was also pretty good. Cappuccino was great. Would come back to this place over and over again.

Plethora of bread & caffeine heaven! The options are so vast and it took a while to pick, which means we will be coming back go try the rest! Had a great time on Sunday AM! Its not fancy, but a good hangout open spot to be with kids and dogs!

What a cute cafe in the middle of nowhere! Plenty of outdoor seating & nice service. The pastry display has a lot of varieties to choose from. Avocado toast was good. One thing I noticed is that some of the croissant sandwiches are not made to order & already made in the display case. But I’ll have to try it next time to see how they are. They also have a crepe station outside. Will try that next time too. But the atmosphere is nice & coffee is hot. Will return for sure.

Not gonna lie – I judge places that purport to be French by their baguettes. I’ve been pretty disappointed by many places in San Diego.

Not this place. I got one on the rather toasty side and it was perfect. Crunchy on the outside, tender and chewy on the inside. But not tough, and that’s key. It also wasn’t flaccid or taste like it was made with mop water (you know who you are).

The croissant with butter and jam was excellent. The La Ficelle was great after warming in the oven a bit. I also got saucisson sec and fraise nougat from their shop, and both are lovely.

The latte was solid, but I look forward to trying other selections on their coffee menu.

Overall this was a big hit, and I’m happy to have found them. 12/10 will go again.

(Four stars for atmosphere because all this goodness is shoehorned into a tiny strip mall space with no indoor seating – which is fine, as there are seats outside – but it gets a bit chilly on a winter morning. SoCal problems…lol.) If you do stop by, pop into the little ranch market next door for an excellent alcohol selection. The proprietor is helpful and friendly, but business is struggling.

Great hidden spot in Scripps Ranch area. Love the quality of the food, especially the bread. Owner is an actual French pastry chef, and the food shows it. A definite stop you need to make in the area.

The French Oven is a little slice of France in San Diego, and we are so lucky! We are fortunate to be able to travel to Paris for work and play and the French Oven is in the top 20% of Parisian Boulangerie/Patisseries. In fact, we really haven’t found anything remotely close in San Diego or California! Yves and his crew are very polite and always greet with a smile. Onto the food: best Quiche Lorraine that my wife and I have ever had — anywhere!!! Take as an example Quiche Lorraine we’ve had at Stohrer, the oldest patisserie in Paris, and The French Oven wins hands down. The Sourdough Rounds are out of this world; have them pre-slice and then pull out of the freezer (a good ole French trick) so you can enjoy amazing bread whenever you want. Add some Bonne Maman jam from the store… Anyhow, everything is just so 5-star it’s ridiculous in a happy way! And the desserts are fantastic too! Curry chicken on a croissant—perfect. We celebrated to today with a slice of Galette des Rois (New Years Cake), and what a start to the New Year. Merci.
