Closed for the season – opening again May 2026! At The Laughing Loon, we serve up lakeside nostalgia with a side of fries. Located on Lake Pennesseewassee, we’re a retro-style takeout joint inspired by classic roadside diners, summer cabins, and the echo of loon calls across the lake. We keep it simple, but delicious with juicy burgers, golden fried baskets, hand-scooped ice cream, and old fashioned milkshakes and fizzy soda floats. Our food is made from fresh whole ingredients, and quality is the foundation of every dish in our menu. Enjoy a creamy cold cone, share a picnic table, and swap stories with neighbors and friends while the sun sets on the lake. We’ll meet you at The Loon!

We stopped by The Laughing Loon on a fall day and were pleasantly surprised by how much this spot delivered. The location is hard to beat—tucked near the lake with a relaxed atmosphere that fits perfectly with the season. You immediately get the sense that the owners care deeply about the experience, both in terms of food and community.

The menu leans into seasonal flavors without trying too hard, and everything we ordered felt thoughtfully prepared. The fried chicken sandwich was a standout—crispy, juicy, and finished with just the right amount of herb mayo and pickles for balance. The smash burger was another highlight, made with local beef and their own “loon sauce,” which gave it a memorable, savory twist.

On the side, we tried the delicata squash rings—lightly battered with a flavorful, savory breading—and paired with whipped maple ricotta (this item was a special that day). A creative and well-executed alternative to the usual onion rings! The fish chowder and baked beans were also solid choices, clearly made with care.

We finished with a warm apple crisp and a scoop of ice cream before they sold out, which was the perfect way to end the meal.

It’s refreshing to find a local spot that puts this much thought into both the food and the overall experience. We’ll definitely plan to stop in again when we’re back in the area, especially during hiking season.

The food here is phenomenal! I got two baskets. One was their chicken which is brined over night in pickle juice, and their shrimp! The shrimp is fried, jumbo, lucious, juicy, and perfect! They leave the tails on, and I think it’s a nice touch.
The place has been so busy, and I love seeing a local business thrive. Each weekend they are either sold out, or they’re out of most items. Good for them! Get here early! .
The layout is relatively the same from when it was talk of the town. They kept the ice cream window separate from the food window. They kept the parking and pic nic tables the same as well. There is lots of parking but it is tight, because they’re bumping!
Handicapp accessable, ample parking, phenomenal food, options for kids and vegans, and smiling personable staff.

The food was incredible and so unique!! I loved the sauerkraut on the red hotdog! The haddock and smashburger were insane! The fudgy vegan homemade cake and whipped cream was fo die for!! The quality ingredients are hard to find and they could easily charge so much more. You can taste the love put into this food and the owners along with staff work so hard to give you an unforgettable Maine experience. This is a new must do for our yearly trip to Maine and should be one of yours too!

This great little gem is around the corner from our home. Great food ! We had fried shrimp plate and a fish plate. Great crispy fries, coleslaw was crisp and cold, shrimp and fish was perfectly cooked. They also have a great ice cream selection. Very cool lakeside rustic dining. We tailgate when we go here and, there is outdoor seating . Check this place out, you will be happy you did.

Yesterday we tried to order and didn’t find out they were sold out of fish and all ice cream (ordered coffee shakes ) until 25 mins later . Got a refund and left empty handed . It was hot waiting in line . 90* degrees . Today they opened at 4 pm instead of 11 am so We were there at 4 . Was able to order 2 fish baskets and two coffee shakes . Both were good . Just wish there was more than 8-10 tidbits of fish .

We had an awesome time at the Laughing Loon! The burgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers, and fries were all super tasty — exactly what we were craving. The sundaes at the end were a huge hit with the kids! The atmosphere is relaxed and fun, and Andrew was fantastic — super friendly and helpful. A perfect Maine ending to a great day!

Are you kidding me?! This is place is everything I hoped it would be and more. Quintessential Maine summer vibes with killer smash burgers [and I am PICKY about my burgers!], the crispiest juiciest fried chicken, fresh crispy fries with perfect seasoning, and don’t even get me started on the cake shake. The quality of food for the price blows my mind, and it’s so rare to find a place with a creative and quality menu that accommodates so many dietary needs, including vegan and gluten free. The owners are kind, accommodating, and community focused and it shows through their interactions with customers. I can’t wait for more stops here this summer!

This place is seriously good. The Maine sourced veggie burger with local fixins was great, the truffle herb fries were amazing, the summer peach slaw was perfect, and the chocolate cake shake was as good as it sounds. The dipping sauces are also homemade and they are legit. Very friendly people and a great overall vibe.

I have to say it is refreshing to have a burger stand that makes a lot of ingredients from scratch and not just frying packaged products. Tonight my wife and I enjoyed their chicken nugget baskets and you can tell the difference with their food. The chicken was crisp on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. Their salt and vinegar fries were just as good, golden and crispy. If you haven’t tried their herb mayo it’s amazing on everything.

I’m not usually a fan of fried seafood, but I made an exception for the fish bites here and I’m glad I did! They’re lightly breaded, so you still get to enjoy the flavor of the fresh fish without it being overwhelmed.

The location is perfect. Right near Norway Lake with peaceful outdoor seating on the lawn. It’s the kind of spot where you can truly relax and enjoy a great meal.

Highly recommend if you’re in the area!
