I recently stopped by Ceres Cafe in the lobby of the historic Board of Trade Building and it was a really cool, unexpected find in downtown Chicago. The atmosphere is this classic Loop vibe — a bit lively, a bit historic, and perfect for unwinding after a day of walking around the city. I tried a couple of their cocktails and definitely understood why folks talk about how strong and generous the pours are; they don’t skimp, so pace yourself if you’re doing a drink or two. The food was solid comfort café fare — simple, tasty, and paired well with the drinks, and I liked that a lot of the menu feels homemade and fresh. It’s the kind of place where locals and office workers mingle, the service feels friendly without being pushy, and the interior gives off that vintage Chicago charm. Whether you go for a casual lunch, happy hour drinks, or a light dinner, it’s a fun, no-fuss spot that left me glad I stopped in.

My friend and I come here a lot, and Pilar is a big reason why. She doesn’t just make great drinks, she treats us like friends every time we sit down. The conversations are easy, genuine, and never forced, and it always feels like we’re catching up with someone we actually enjoy being around, not just ordering from a bartender.
What we really appreciate is how comfortable she makes the whole experience. Whether it’s slow or packed, Pilar always takes the time to talk, check in, and make sure everything’s good without hovering. She remembers things, listens, and makes you feel like a regular even if you weren’t one yet.
She also handles busy nights incredibly well. We’ve seen her juggle a full bar, multiple conversations, and nonstop orders without getting stressed or short with anyone. She stays calm, friendly, and on top of everything, which says a lot about how good she is at her job.
There’s a level of trust we have when she’s behind the bar. We know the drinks will be right, the vibe will be good, and the experience will be worth staying for. That’s not something every bartender can create, and it’s why we keep choosing to come back.
Pilar already acts like someone who represents the place in the best way possible. She builds real connections with customers, keeps people coming back, and makes the bar feel like somewhere you want to spend your time. Promoting her would just be recognizing what she’s already doing every shift.

Visited on Thursday evening around 6pm.
I’ve passed & heard of this place for a while, but never visited. Did a quick TT search and learned it was the place that gives you a cup of “feel good” with a chaser on the side.

I ordered a Paloma- heavy pour. Requested a side of squirt & without hesitation they brought it to me.

Excuse the food photos, I didn’t plan on recording. The food is delicious!! Which was a pleasant surprise, considering the amount of “feel good” you receive in a cup. The fried shrimp 10/10. Turkey chili 7.5/10 (I like mine w/ a kick, flavor is good though). Brussel sprouts 8/10 (needed a sprinkle of salt & crispy edges- delicious nonetheless). Sliders were tasty 7/10 (we asked for mayo to spruce it up). Wings were delicious & cooked thoroughly 9/10. Artichoke dip was decadent & gooey 8/10. Truffle fries were good, too 7/10 (homemade taste, I like em’ crisper though)- aioli, remoulade & sauces were spot on!

It was pretty much a full house up until they closed at 8pm. We dined at the outside patio. It was 6 of us, bill came out to $361. Price of drinks are very reasonable, same for the food.

I hope you enjoy feedback about Ceres Cafe .

Definitely worth the experience!

I checked off my first visit during Happy Hour.

Food:I had The Butterflied Shrimp and they were sooooo good! The Sriracha Mayo Sauce with them was everything!!

Drinks: They are known for their drinks and strong doesn’t even begin to describe The Margarita I had … .WHEW! LOL!! Cheers!

Service: Good! No complaints at all!

Atmosphere/Ambiance: It gave me the vibes of a Cheers Bar with the locals where “everybody knows your name.” It was good energy. It really was the lunch break/after work vibes!

Final Thoughts/Recommendations: I’d definitely return. The Bartenders were great. Eric was so chill (in a good way) and Frank was HILARIOUS! Thanks guys!

Fun atmosphere with very strong drinks and a good variety of food/bar snacks.

Lesson learned: don’t order at the bar and go to a table – we made that mistake, but overall they were pretty nice about it.

Very nice location and atmosphere adjacent to CBOT. We went for lunch around 1 on a Friday and the wait time was acceptable. They have a great outdoor sitting location, although it’s a little bit disconcerting to be enjoying your company and food, to then have random people approach your table for money.

The food… no way to beautify these remarks… leftovers maybe? I ordered a Ruben sandwich and my date ordered buffalo chicken wings I think. Her wings did not come out hot, but warm. They were far from tender, intact based on the temperature and texture of the meat, we both concluded that they were warmed up in a microwave. If you’ve ever had left over chicken that tried to warm up in the microwave and left them in a little too long, you know what I mean. The meat was tough and hard in spots.

The corn beef on my Ruben seemed to have received the same treatment. I also ordered “Fresh Squeezed Lemonade” that had a slight aftertaste like it was made with a mix or concentrate devoid of a single piece of pulp that you might expect to see I fresh squeezed lemonade.

Our server was very pleasant and attentive.

Ceres is one of the remaining true classic Chicago bars where you can go to unwind after work, be around great people, and served by friendly and professional staff.

I’ve been going to Ceres off and on for over 15 years and it’s always a pleasure to see the staff and sit at some of my favorite tables.

If you’re visiting Chicago and will be near LaSalle and Jackson in the financial district – pop on in for their iconic “Ceres Old Fashioned”!

Always a good time at Ceres Cafe! Start early. They do. They also end early but it’s understandable. They are located on the heart of the financial district, which shuts down early. Get ready for the DRINKS! They have a nice food menu, but the DRINKS. If you order a rum & coke, you will get a short tumbler of rum and a can of coke! That’s all I have to say about that!

Coming to Ceres after a local friend’s recommendation. Asked for a good recommendation to Maria, who’s been working for Ceres for 25+ years, and she told me I wont be disappointed. She was right. All of the staff were very attentive and generous. I had a great last meal at Chicago and hope to be back again soon.
