We had lunch at the restaurant on our way to the falls. Parking is available at the back of the restaurant, with a back entrance a few feet away. The parking lot gave us a few scary thoughts, but it was all gone after we entered the restaurant. The restaurant has a beautiful ambiance with Mexican tiles and a ranch vibe. The staff is sweet and friendly. The food tasted fantastic and authentic. Good portions of food. They have a wide variety of margaritas and cocktails.

The food was full of flavor and arrived sizzling hot — super tasty! The atmosphere was colorful and cozy. Service was good, just a little slow at times. Definitely worth a visit!

We enjoyed dinner at this restaurant and we’re pleased with the flavors of our meal. Three of us enjoyed their vegetarian burrito while the fourth person had a combo plate. All thoroughly enjoyed the food. There was parking behind the restaurant. Highly recommend this spot.

I will say that El Sombrero has the best Mexican food I have eaten , maybe ever. The mole sauce really is the best. The menu has so many wonderful options. The seafood enchiladas are awesome. The Pollo mole is worth coming back for. The staff are kind and very attentive. Don’t forget the fresh margaritas. Made fresh to order with real juice no mixers.

Our family goes to El Sombrero all the time and the food and service are always wonderful! The chicken mole and arroz con pollo are some of our favorites. The owners are so kind and the staff always make us feel right at home. Can’t say enough good things about El Sombrero!

I felt well taken care of by the warm family that runs this place. Free chips and salsa served immediately, and I came for the giant classic “build your own combo” meal, which was huge and quite a bargain. And my main goal was to try the chile relleno which was one of the most classic versions I’ve had in Portland so far. Portland is not a very good town for chili rellenos, and I have only found a few after looking pretty hard. (Portland does make a fair number of chile relleno burritos though in case you were about to argue with me).
The vibe is also very cozy and comfortable.

We fell in love with this place from day one. Hard to believe that it was right around the corner, and we had no idea until just recently. My wife had had an incident that required medical attention, and I was left to take care of the kids while she recuperated. I grabbed a couple of the Mexican pizza appetizers as a quick dinner solution, and we were so blown away that we came back the very next day!
The matronly owner (I’m assuming, but I have a good feeling about it) is so warm and welcoming, on every visit, that she feels like a member of your family. Having forgotten that dine-in service was restricted (again!) the day after our previous visit due to COVID restrictions, we were forced to take today’s order to go, but that did not detract from the wonderful service we received, once again.
The food itself? Phenomenal. Mexican cuisine seems to be resilient to incompetence, but El Sombrero is something else. I think they have taken the top spot and are now my absolute favorite. The carne asade burrito I had today was mind-blowingly fabulous! My wife had the tortilla soup, which did wonders for her recuperation, and the kids, having eaten their school lunches, snacked on luxurious queso and chips, thick and rich and wonderful. We snuck a couple bites ourselves! And to top it all off, two watermelon habanero margaritas (to go) that hit every single note of spicy, sweet and salty, with a helluva punch. That cocktail alone is worth the price of admission!
I’d read previous reviews from out of town travelers that confessed they never leave Portland without a visit to El Sombrero, and now I understand why. This is the best Mexican restaurant in Portland, hands down.

Atmosphere and service was great . It’s the food that has no real flavor. The salsa was just lacking, not savory or spicy. 3/10. I had the Mexican pizza and while the meat was tender the pizza as a whole just came up short on flavor. Also the cheese stuck to the box ( no wax paper or foil to prevent it from soaking threw the cardboard yuck ), and they charged for the box.

My boss took us here for dinner after a business meeting. Excellent choice! Extremely good food and service. Their Chicken en mole was so Extremely good. I will be back!
