I asked Grok about Dametra and these were the results:
Overview
Dametra Fresh Mediterranean is a popular fast-casual restaurant specializing in authentic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine, located in the heart of Marina, California. It’s known for its fresh, customizable meals that emphasize high-quality ingredients, aromatic spices, and healthy options—think Chipotle-style assembly but with a flavorful Greek twist. Diners can build their own bowls, wraps, or salads with choices like grilled meats, falafel, hummus, and vibrant sides. The spot blends casual dining with a welcoming vibe, offering indoor seating, a cozy outdoor patio, and takeout/delivery for quick bites. It’s a go-to for locals and visitors seeking flavorful, nourishing food without the formality of fine dining.
History
The restaurant is part of the Dametra family, founded by Syrian immigrant Bashar Sneeh and Jordanian-born executive chef Faisal Nimri, who bonded over their shared passion for Middle Eastern culture and cuisine after meeting in California. Nimri, who immigrated in 1994 and cut his teeth in Monterey’s restaurant scene, teamed up with Sneeh (who arrived in 2004) to open the original Dametra Cafe in Carmel-by-the-Sea in June 2008—a more upscale spot named after Damascus and Petra, featuring live music and belly dancers. That location quickly earned accolades, including “Business of the Year” from the Carmel Chamber of Commerce in 2010 and top rankings on TripAdvisor and Yelp.
Building on that success, they expanded with a fast-casual outpost in Monterey in 2014, followed by the Marina location in 2018. Tucked into The Dunes shopping center, this site incorporates “The General Bar,” a historic sports bar vibe for drinks and game-watching, adding a fun, relaxed layer to the Mediterranean focus. As of November 2025, it’s thriving as a community staple, with ongoing menu tweaks to highlight seasonal fresh flavors.
Menu Highlights
The menu is build-your-own, promoting customization for dietary needs (vegan, gluten-free options abound). Key categories include:
• Pitas and Wraps: Freshly baked pita stuffed with gyro, chicken shawarma, kafta kebab, or falafel, topped with tzatziki, tahini, or spicy harissa.
• Plates and Bowls: Grilled kebabs (chicken, lamb, or veggie) over rice, greens, or quinoa, paired with authentic Greek salads, hummus, and sides like Mediterranean fries or dolmas.
• Salads and Starters: Crisp Greek salads with house dressing, baba ganoush, or spanakopita.
• Desserts and Drinks: Baklava, rice pudding, or herbal teas; the bar slings craft cocktails, local beers, and wines.
Portions are generous and prices mid-range (entrees $12–$18), with rave reviews for the falafel, chicken kebabs, and that addictive Greek salad dressing. Recent updates include a “new menu” rollout emphasizing even fresher, lighter options.
Atmosphere and Practical Info
Housed at 120 General Stilwell Dr, Ste 110 (in The Dunes retail center, easy access off Highway 1), the space feels vibrant yet chill—bright interiors with warm lighting, plus that inviting patio for Monterey Bay breezes. It’s family-friendly, with kid-approved picks, and the staff gets consistent props for being friendly and efficient. Open daily: 11 AM–9 PM (Sun until 8:30 PM), with happy hour specials at the bar.
A Must-Visit Gem – Dametra!
Absolutely loved my experience at Dametra! The chicken shawarma wrap was hands down one of the best I’ve ever had — packed with flavor, perfectly wrapped, and beautifully presented. You can tell they put real heart into their food and service.
Huge shoutout to Hamada and Dmitri for making the experience even better — their hospitality, energy, and attention to detail made me feel right at home. If you’re in town and want amazing food with top-tier service, Dametra is the spot.
I’ll definitely be coming back!
a young girl helped us, she was a bit rude and made the experience very awkward/unpleasant. It was our first time here and she just seemed annoyed.
The food was good, and we were really looking forward to being regulars when we saw the place online but now we’re a little hesitant.
This was a great spot and I will definitely stop by again whenever I’m in the area.
They will instead give you gyro boiling inside a pan.
Their chicken comes off the broiler though.
*Oh, don’t forget to try the baklava!
