We made our reservation on OPEN TABLE for Friday 2023 11 03 at 7:15 p.m. and arrived 5 minutes early. We were asked to wait in the bar area because a group was finishing.
We sat and I ordered Julie a glass of Pinot, while I was given a choice of 3 draft beers. As the bartender drew beverage from the keg, it spurted air, indicative of being empty. It turned out only one of the kegs functioned, so my choice was NO CHOICE at all.
As we sipped our drinks, another couple entered and were told there would be a wait. When asked to move to the bar area, they remained by the entrance, appearing to ready themselves to pounce at the first available table. Julie stood with her drink to remind the hostess we had been waiting longer. Eventually our two tables were ready simultaneously, and we were all seated.
At first, Julie and I believed this place was going to be a great experience. The atmosphere was decent and the menus were presented on high-tech tablets. Choices seemed delightful, though costly and a-la-carte; but we were determined to indulge and enjoy.
When the young server came to take our order we requested Clams Posillipo with garlic, white wine, and basil, priced $14.00, Caesar Salad with parmesan, garlic croutons, priced $12.00, and for entrees Julie ordered Cavatelli broccoli rabe, sausage, garlic & oil priced $18.00, and I ordered the Rib Eye cooked medium rare, priced $36.00. Our server asked if we wanted sides for additional charges, but we felt we would eat the salad as a side, so we declined and asked our server to bring the salad with the entrees.
Twenty minutes passed with little acknowledgement from the staff, except for the gentleman who continued to refill the water. Eventually our server delivered the clams and the salad, completely ignoring our request to receive the salad with the entrees.
The clams appeared DEFLATED. and were completely TASTELESS AND RUBBERY, as though they were cooked in a microwave. We should have trusted our instincts and not eaten them, because the aftertaste lingered into the night, and caused us both digestive discomfort.
The salad was the best part of the meal, flawlessly made, I suppose because salad creation is not rocket science, however, its size was miniscule, barely a portion for one, and for the $12 price tag, we expected more than just a few bits of lettuce and croutons.
An abundant amount of minutes passed between appetizers and entrees. The other couple that had seated in synchronization with us were finishing their meals as we continued to wait. Only visits from staffers were attempts to get us to order second drinks, but never removing empty glasses, or offering explanation as to why our meals were so delayed. Eventually after more than half an hour, we made two inquiries as to the whereabouts of our MEALS M.I.A..
When they arrived, the entrees were AWFUL! Julie described the broccoli rabe in her pasta dish as SANDY and STARCHY. My steak, which deserves its own 1-star rating, came out on an extremely hot plate that felt as though it has been under a broiler. When Julie passed it to me, she received a blister on her finger. The steak was completely black on one side, light years from the medium rare I had requested. (Please see photo.)
At this point, we told our waitress we’d pay for the clams and salad, but not the uneaten entrees. The manager, to his credit, allowed the entire bill to be uncharged, which was the correct thing to do under the circumstances.
This place was an utter disappointment and fell far short of our expectations. We would not return for even a free meal.
Service was friendly but lagged a bit. Drinks were pretty good.
Appetizers were not great. We order calamari which was BLAND and zucchini flowers that were tasty, but seemed to contain mostly batter and not much zucchini flower.
I ordered the NY Strip and was probably given the fattiest NY Strip I have ever ordered in my life. 1/3 of the steak was fat and inedible; it was also on the blander side and needed to be dressed up with sauces. It was, however, cooked correctly, and the sides we ordered were decent as well.
Portions are small; others ordered chicken dishes and were given two small pieces–so it’s almost necessary to order the a la carte sides along with your entree.
Prices are fair for a “steakhouse”; however, I think the prices seem to reflect the portion and quality of the food– so this may explain why it was cheaper than most others I’ve been to. Overall, was just okay, and it did not feel like, nor provide, the quality of a steakhouse.
The next day, we showed up to the restaurant only to find out that Macelleria was CLOSED. On Mother’s Day – after they had advertised on their website to come dine with them. This put a damper on my mom’s day, which is the absolute last thing any of us wanted for her. We then had to scramble to find another place to eat without a reservation, which took us some time and wasn’t nearly the experience we had promised her.
We also found out that we were not the only people who had this experience – unbeknownst to us, a family friend had also made a reservation at Macelleria for 1pm on Mother’s Day and endured a similar scramble after showing up to a closed establishment. We found out later that day when we were explaining what had happened to us.
Both of us had tried getting in touch with someone from Macelleria’s staff but only got a voicemail (which said they opened at 5pm when your website clearly says 11:30am-9pm).
Overall, I am very disappointed about the experience. This was not only a special occasion for us, but for many other mothers and families in the area. I am shocked that no one from the restaurant was monitoring your Mother’s Day reservations so that we could have been notified about the “new hours.” It is your duty, as the establishment, to relay any pertinent messages to your diners – whether that is through OpenTable or directly to customers – to ensure they have a positive experience when engaging with your services.
I don’t know what else to say other than we are disappointed and that this was sloppy. Something should be done to make it right.
The appetizers were ehh. Nothing was amazing. The octopus was very chewy. The Caesar salad was all iceberg lettuce. There was no green to the salad at all.
We were all expecting the steak to be great bc it’s a Steak restaurant. They never mentioned they were out of the Tomahawk, so that was disappointing. We got there at 7pm, so I’m not sure how they sold out in the two hours they were open prior to us arriving . My steak was still alive basically. It was supposed to be medium and it was rare. My friend sent his back bc it was under cooked, and when it was brought back it was still undercooked. The waitress said the corn was her favorite side so we got that. It was bland. There was no seasoning at all.
My friends said the pasta was great. I guess we should have known to get the pasta at a steakhouse. .
They also refused one of the guests to come bc he would have to wear a hat due to a medical condition.
Overall I would never come back.
