The atmosphere carries an organized charm. Lively, slightly unpredictable, and refreshingly unconcerned with presentation for presentation’s sake. It feels authentic. The sort of place that exists to serve proper bagels first and let everything else fall into place naturally.
Across the street sits Panera Bread, the two establishments facing one another all day like boxers before the bell. One polished, predictable, and corporate. The other expressive, independent, and entirely uninterested in playing the same game. It is a quiet standoff, and the result becomes obvious the moment food is involved.
We ordered the Asiago bacon, egg, and cheese bagel sandwich, which remains my gold standard for judging all bagel sandwiches. Fancy Bagels delivered with authority. The bacon was applied generously and without apology. The eggs and cheese were fresh, well prepared, and balanced, allowing the bagel itself to remain the anchor of the sandwich.
This was not a delicate breakfast. It was a satisfying one. The kind that earns loyalty through substance rather than spectacle.
Somewhere between bites, a harmless thought drifted in. Why are seagulls called seagulls? If seagulls lived by the bay, they would surely be called bagels. It felt like precisely the kind of observation Fancy Bagels would approve of.
The only regret was missing out on one of their excellent ball caps, which were sold out at the time. A minor disappointment and a promising sign. I will be back the next time I am in Connecticut, and with any luck, so will the hats.
Fancy Bagels is the kind of place that makes you cross the street with purpose. A decision guided less by convenience and more by good judgment.
First time there was today. The older lady with the short cut at the register feels like grandma. She’s so nice.
I love the plate it forward idea. The line was literally out of the door. From standing in line to getting food to walking out of the other door took 15mins.
I had two orders and both were made well. I had the bagel with cream cheese and bacon. I would have liked a little more bacon for the price but they did very well with the cream cheese. Bagel was tasty. Not sure why the asiago bagel had a mild taste of onion flavor which was unique.
My wife seemed to enjoy her bagel (pictured). The contents of the bacon egg and cheese seemed thin however my wife didn’t mind.
(Thin compared to a place like Neil’s Donuts)
One more thing – owner Jackie is so sweet and such a good person; she is always doing charitable things for the local community. Right now, there is a food donation board (see photo) and a donation box for veterans (I believe they are currently asking for 2024 calendars) . This is more than just a business to her – you can see how she cares for the community. I am proud to give my business to this place.
