My son and I had a great experience here about a week earlier, so I drove out of my way to come back for an early-bird dinner. The restaurant was completely empty, which gave me high hopes for an even better visit. One can only hope.

Unfortunately, this time was a major disappointment. I suspect my first mistake was ordering from the happy hour menu. I ordered the sashimi combo #1, along with hot sake and edamame. The hot sake never arrived, which I initially let go, but the sushi itself was unacceptable. The nigiri was tough and chewy, and the cuts of fish were poor quality. The ahi tuna nigiri was the only item that was even remotely edible.

What ultimately ensured I won’t return was a serious hygiene concern. I used the restroom after the chef, and I am certain he did not wash his hands. There were no wet paper towels in the trash, and when I passed by the table where he was sitting, his hands were completely dry. That alone was enough to make the entire experience extremely off-putting.

To make matters worse, I was still charged for the hot sake I never received. While mistakes can happen during busy times, this occurred when I was literally the only customer in the restaurant. They printed another receipt and assured me that the first one wasn’t finalized, so no harm done.

Overall, this visit was a complete letdown and not an experience I’m willing to repeat. What a shame.

Nice spot to get a bite (or three!) of Japanese flavor in downtown Santa Cruz! Veg gyoza, special veg roll and umeshizo maki, and curry croquette were all really tasty.

I’ve been coming here since I was a kid, and the quality is as good as it’s always been! The sake donburi has been my favorite item on the new menu.

Cute restaurant, really amazing sushi, curry chicken, and tonkatsu ramen were all amazing. The staff was very nice, we had a friend with a birthday and they brought out free matcha ice cream. The only downside was that the service was super slow (they did warn us it would be slow). It took about an hour for our food to get there. Aside from that, it was a super lovely meal, pretty cute interior, and lots of seating.

We got seated, everyone around us had their food and it looked delicious, but no one took our order or asked if we wanted drinks for genuinely 20 minutes. We saw two other people get seated after us and get water instantly so we just got up and left. Incredibly frustrating experience.

This is our favorate Sush in the Santa Cruz. The place has amazingly tasty rolls and always super fresh, special fish selections for nigiri and sashimi. Thank you for another great night

Food was very disappointing and not good. The restaurant itself and the servers were nice but clearly super understaffed.

We were excited to try Shogun after living in the area for two years and finally decided to give it a shot. Unfortunately, our experience was a bit disappointing.

To start, we ordered edamame and a crab roll as appetizers. My husband’s crab roll came out quickly, and he really enjoyed it, but my edamame never arrived. For my entrée, I ordered the spicy tofu soup, which was surprisingly bland—I had to add a lot of soy sauce just to make it palatable. The soup was supposed to come with rice and salad, but those never showed up either.

Although our waitress was friendly, she was not very attentive. We had to flag her down after finishing our meals just to ask about the missing food. She apologized and claimed the kitchen was behind, but considering how quickly other items came out, that excuse didn’t seem very convincing. She did comp the edamame, which was appreciated, but when we asked for a box to take it to go, she forgot, and we had to ask another employee after asking about 10 minutes later.

Overall, while the food was hit-or-miss, the service was the biggest letdown. We understand that restaurants can get busy, but basic attentiveness and follow-through were lacking. Not sure if we’ll be back anytime soon.

Good sushi! A little expensive for what it is, but satisfying and clearly made from quality ingredients:) we got the orange blossom, the crunch roll and the lion king, and surprisingly for me, the orange blossom was my favorite, simple, but hits the spot!
