I woke up early with a serious craving for pozole, but when I couldn’t find any, I noticed the reviews for the menudo at this El Michoacana location were really strong. That was all the convincing I needed.
I called early in the morning and was assured they had menudo available mid-week, so I grabbed a book, stayed in my pajamas, and headed out. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted warmly, seated right away, and offered coffee, which set the tone.
When it came time to order, the server asked all the right questions — hominy, pig feet, corn tortillas — the kind of questions that let you know they take this dish seriously. My bowl arrived quickly, steaming and inviting.
Now the best part: this is hands down the best menudo I’ve had in 35 years. As a true lover of Mexican food, I can say with full confidence that no one in Austin has them beat. I’ve searched high and low, and this bowl reminded me exactly why traditional Mexican food is so special. It was rich, comforting, and made with that unmistakable warmth and care that comes from the soul.
This wasn’t just breakfast — it was an experience. I’ll absolutely be back.

This a family run restaurant. The waitress told us it’s been open for 31 years, I wanted to try everything on the menu but had to narrow it down to the carnitas plate it was perfect. I definitely recommend this place.

This hidden spot is a real treasure. The food at El Michoacano restaurant is authentic 100% at first we missed the turn due to it being such a small little restaurant but luckily we turned around and went back. The food was absolutely amazing. Taste just like my mother in laws food. I had the enchiladas mexicana with fajitas. Hubby tried the puerco in salsa verde with homemade tortillas. The enchiladas were stuffed with cheese cooked in a spicy red sauce I added sour cream to dial down the heat it was topped with lettuce, cheese, and avocado. Plus the salsa that came with the chips was delicious! Plus the fresh pineapple drink and michelada topped off the perfectly seasoned meal The little restaurant was empty and we got served fast.

I decided to try this place out for lunch. Ordered 2 tacos. 1 beef and 1 chicken fajita style tacos. Get to my vehicle and found 2 small tacos. Almost disappointed. However, these tacos were absolutely delicious! Best I’ve had in a while. Well worth the money! Satisfaction! The green hot sauce topped it all off just right. Thank you for a really good 1st experience. I will return.

Down to earth grub with homemade flour and corn tortillas. Real food for workin’ people. Honestly great place to get a bite especially if you’ve been on a long flight.
The rice isn’t in a style I like, or could just be the type of rice grain, but the flavor is good.

I’m in Austin for business, needed to find somewhere near the hotel to eat, and came across El Michoacano on Google maps. I had the best experience and the food was delicious! Liz was incredibly nice and helpful with the menu. She makes you feel very welcome and the food portions are very large. I had the enchiladas a la mexicana with fajita beef and chicken, and the agua de piña. Definitely worth the stop. Don’t be fooled by the odd location.

So first off, the food is excellent. This is Mexican food, scratch made home cooking. The salsa is the best I have ever had. The carnitas were excellent, 5 stars, the barbacoa is cheek meat & was excellent. Rice ,& beans, best I have had. The corn & flour tortillas were scratch made & excellent. We had a side of 2 enchilada’s with the mole chocolate sauce, which was unique & very good. Sweet & spicy. Chorizo queso was very good. Pricing was very affordable. Liz, our server was so friendly & helpful. Service is 5 stars. So why 4 star rating? The building itself needs some remodeling/fixing up. But by no means would this keep me from eating here again. Highly recommend, like ten star (on 5 star scale) recommend, as I believe most people have only had tex-mex & not home made Mexican food. Some might say, life changing.
