Peninsula Pies is a very small place, but the owners have created a very warm, attractive atmosphere. It’s only been open since last October, the owners ran a pizza food truck for 3 years before that. The atmosphere is more than attractive, it’s airy, fresh and light, just like the food.
This is wood-fired pizza, made in a small outdoor kitchen just off the dining room. And from that oven comes delicious, Neapolitan-style, thin crust pizza. And Garlic Cheese Bread made from the same pizza dough.
We ordered the Salad, the aforementioned Garlic Cheese Bread, and the Pepperoni Pizza. All the pizzas are 10″. As I told the very friendly female owner, three words describe the food: light, fresh, and delicious. This is Italian food full of flavor that doesn’t weigh you down. The salad was mixed greens, sliced cucumber, cherry tomatoes, grated parmesan cheese and a lemony vinaigrette. I don’t where they source those cherry tomatoes from, but when I took a bite of the orange one, it burst with full, fresh tomatoey flavor in my mouth.
The Garlic Cheese Bread had a wonderful garlic flavor without it being overbearing. The melted mozzarella and provolones cheese beautifully blended with olive oil. It was thin and chewy, and you could bend it, in the same fashion of one of my favorite types of pizza crust. There were delightful blackened spots on it from the wood fire. It was served with a fresh, light, housemade tomato dipping sauce.
The pepperoni pizza was wonderful. A wonderful marriage of crust, mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce, pepperoni, and grated parm. But since it was 10″ and there were two of us, my wife and I were glad we ordered the salad and the garlic bread. Just like the salad and garlic bread, the pizza was delicious, fresh, and light.
We also ordered a glass each of a delicious Italian Refosco, a red wine, but I can’t remember the name of it.
My wife kept raving about how fresh and delicious the water in our glasses was. I’m writing this paragraph the next day. She’s STILL raving about how fresh and delicious the water at this restaurant was. We agreed, the best word to describe Peninsula Pies is fresh.
Hansville is a bit of a drive for many of us, but my wife and I feel that Peninsula Pies is a destination worth the drive. In fact, as we had planned, it capped off a wonderful day of driving around the Olympic Peninsula and, as planned, ending our day here. The couple who own the business are friendly and gracious hosts. We’re looking forward to our next visit.
