Calandra’s Bakery was founded in 1962 by Luciano Calandra, an Italian immigrant who had been in America for just five years. Today, the family has three bakeries and their products are delivered to more than 500 supermarkets, delis, and restaurants. In addition to their bakeries, the Calandra family now owns and operates several hotels, restaurants, and apartment buildings.

Calandra’s Bakery ruined our daughters’ first birthday and handled it with arrogance, hostility, and zero accountability.
We paid $400 for a custom cake — and we even had to supply our own candy hearts for the decoration — yet the entire bottom tier collapsed. The cake was constructed incorrectly: the dowels were tilted, the cake was sliding, and it ultimately caved in. This was not handling error. This was baker incompetence. The baker was Alida.
When we called to report the issue, the manager Tony was beyond unprofessional. Instead of apologizing or trying to help us salvage a cake for a once-in-a-lifetime event, he immediately became nasty and defensive, blaming us and saying we should have paid extra for delivery — as if delivery magically fixes a cake that was built wrong to begin with.
After exhausting back-and-forth and only after we threatened to file a fraud charge, Tony agreed to send a replacement. The replacement was a joke:
• Looked nothing like what we ordered
• Arrived late (promised 2:20, arrived 2:55)
• Our event ended at 3
• Was stale, ugly, and poorly finished
• Had gray piping, not the rainbow design we were promised
When we asked for a timing update because our event was literally ending, Tony had the nerve to give us more attitude and tell us we “have to be patient.”
The delivery men were just as awful. When shown the completely collapsed original cake, they shrugged and tossed it like trash — no concern, no apology, no professionalism.
Not a single person ever apologized for ruining such an important milestone. No compensation was offered. When we asked for compensation, Tony yelled at us on the phone, blamed us again, and refused to take responsibility for a cake that failed due to their own poor construction.
For a bakery that charges premium prices and claims to be reputable, this was embarrassing, careless, and cruel. They took our money, our time, and completely destroyed a moment we can never get back.
If you care about your event, your money, or basic human decency — do not trust Calandra’s Bakery.
When we called, the manager Tony was rude, dismissive, and defensive, blaming us and telling us we should have paid extra for delivery. He even suggested we drive 35 minutes away, wait 30 minutes while he “fixed” it, and drive 35 minutes back, all during the party, which was absolutely insane.
After threatening a fraud dispute, he sent a replacement — a plain white cake with basic piping — which:
• Looked nothing like what we ordered
• Arrived late (promised 2:20, arrived 2:55)
• Our event ended at 3
• Was stale, ugly, and poorly decorated
• Had gray piping, not the rainbow design promised
Tony ignored our calls when we asked for an ETA. The delivery men were dismissive, shrugging at the destroyed original cake and tossing it aside. No apology. No compensation. When asked for compensation, Tony yelled at us and blamed us, despite the cake failing entirely due to their mistakes.
This was a once-in-a-lifetime birthday for our twin nieces, and Calandra’s Bakery completely ruined it. For $400, you expect care, professionalism, and a beautiful cake — we got disrespect, incompetence, heartbreak.
At the end the owner Tom did call us back an apologized multiple times and was very nice. He offered for us to come back and visit and have them bake a cake for another birthday or event. He said he would talk to Tony and whoever. What happened, happened and no matter how many times a person can apologize it won’t change what happened. I appreciate Tom calling and apologizing and promising things like this don’t happen.
To make matters worse, Tony, the manager, was rude and disrespectful when the issue was brought up. No accountability, no professionalism, and no attempt to make things right.
I will never return to Calandra’s Bakery in Caldwell, NJ, and I will be making sure none of my family or friends ever step foot in this place again. Would never recommend this establishment to anyone. Save your money and go elsewhere.
The only reason I gave 4 stars is because communication in the days before the wedding was nonexistent. Having driven from S. Florida, there was no way to drop the cake topper off without going a few hours out of our way and neither of us were in any shape to drive from Sussex County to Caldwell that Friday. (We also forgot by the time we reached the state being so exhausted). I was told that the top would be left clear if we didn’t have an opportunity to bring the topper in, but we heard nothing about it having been delivered. I had to ask one of the restaurant staff at the reception to make sure it did arrive. Everything else far exceeded anything we hoped.
I can’t recommend this bakery enough for any special occasion (or even a mixed platter/box for family gatherings; just make sure if you have more than one chocolate fiend to buy extra brownies to prevent arguments). The flowers on the table itself were ours.
I am absolutely shocked and heartbroken by the way Calandra’s Bakery handled our twin granddaughters’ first birthday cake. We paid $400 for a custom cake — and even had to supply our own candy hearts — and the entire bottom tier collapsed. The cake was constructed incorrectly, the dowels were tilted, and it was sliding off the base. This was not our fault — this was baker incompetence. The baker was Alida.
When we called to report the disaster, the manager Tony was rude, dismissive, and nasty. Instead of helping us salvage the cake, he blamed us, said we should have paid extra for delivery, and then had the nerve to tell us we should drive 35 minutes away, wait 30 minutes while he “fixed” it, and drive 35 minutes back — all while our twin granddaughters’ party was happening. Absolutely unbelievable.
After threatening a fraud dispute, Tony finally sent a replacement cake — which was just a plain white cake with basic piping, looked nothing like what we ordered, and:
• Arrived late (promised 2:20, showed up at 2:55)
• Our event ended at 3
• Was stale, ugly, and poorly decorated
• Had gray piping, not the promised rainbow design
When we tried to get an ETA for the replacement cake, Tony did not answer any of our phone calls. When it finally arrived, his attitude was the same — dismissive and rude — telling us to “be patient” while the delivery men shrugged at the ruined original cake and tossed it aside.
No apology. No compensation. When we asked for compensation, Tony yelled and blamed us, despite the cake being a complete failure due to their mistakes.
We were celebrating a once-in-a-lifetime milestone for our granddaughters, and Calandra’s Bakery ruined it entirely. For $400, you expect care, professionalism, and a beautiful cake — we got disrespect, incompetence, and heartbreak instead.
Do not trust Calandra’s Bakery with anything that matters.
The bottom layer completely gave out, causing the cake to collapse, and the top layer began to sink and tilt. This wasn’t a minor cosmetic issue, the cake was unstable and embarrassing to present at an important family milestone.
When we contacted the bakery, the manager, Tony, offered no real solution. Instead of attempting to make things right or offering compensation, the only resolution suggested was that we should have the cake delivered next time, which does nothing to address the poor craftsmanship of the cake itself or salvage the ruined event.
For a bakery that sells custom cakes for special occasions, this level of quality and customer service is unacceptable. Unfortunately, this experience caused unnecessary stress on what should have been a joyful day, and I would not recommend ordering a cake from here.
