It was a perfect experience! The service was outstanding with a waiter who was extremely familiar with the menu and the wine list. The food had an inventive mix of flavors and was incredibly fresh. We started with the tuna tartar and the beef carpaccio croquettes. For our entrees we had the miso sea bass. The waiter stated that every dish on the menu was wonderful and after our experience I am sure that is true!

Thank you for a great evening and some very memorable food!

Not a bad meal for the price! Service is very attentive and clean. Most of the dishes were great. The bar area is also a sushi spot which is cool. They have these fancy degloved almonds from Spain on the cheeseboard too. Menu changes daily so no recommendations.

MARKET is a 5 star restaurant in every way. Our server was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The room was beautiful, and quiet enough for easy conversation. The four of us brought in wine which paired wonderfully with the gourmet cuisine. Everyone loved their meals. I had the apple smoked king salmon to start, and the short ribs as my entree. The plating was stunning, and the tastes were carefully chosen, woven together and prepared perfectly. Desserts were also delicious! We look forward to returning to MARKET on our next trip to southern California!

I have been to and thoroughly enjoyed ‘The Market Restaurant’ on Via de la Valle in Del Mar many times. I took my family there for a holiday dining experience in December and we had a good time. BUT, when I met a girlfriend to enjoy the ala carte menu less than a week ago everything was sub par or worse! I ordered a glass of champagne…it was flat so the server brought me another and it actually had bubbles in the glass. Go figure! I ordered a fish dinner (unfortunately not one chicken dish on the menu) the fish was not delicate in the middle but passable, however, as I worked my way to the ends of the piece it was dry and sinewy. I showed it to the server and asked her to show the Chef. I was not asking for a refund of any type I just thought he should see it. I didn’t really get any feedback and later the server offered me something else to eat.
I was full by then but a nice gesture. So I decided to order a Cosmos. I received a large wine glass with a very dark red, frothy concoction. It was so sour and the texture a bit thick and unpleasant to drink. The server was almost apologetic when she brought it to me and said the bartender was using the actual pomegranate fruit and blending it up. Interesting idea but maybe he should have tested it first?
That being said I hope this is not a sign that ‘The Market’ is going downhill. I love the casual atmosphere…it is no longer formal and people dress accordingly. My husband actually felt overdressed in a sports coat. It’s great but now we know!
I don’t write reviews to make negative comments but this was just SO bad. It’s not inexpensive restaurant so I have greater expectations.

The food here is as good as it gets. Carl is absolutely brilliant in his combinations of flavors. The dishes have amazing complexity, with no ingredient getting in the way of another.
The portion sizes are very generous.
Chelsea our waitress was on top of all our needs, in a perfect way. Everyone was professional. The greeters, bus people and the kitchen staff.
It was truly wonderful from beginning to end.
We live 160 miles from here. Otherwise we would eat here at least once a week.
I don’t understand Michlin not giving them multiple stars.

Market Restaurant and Bar came highly recommended to my husband and I and we could not be happier we dined there. The bartender Jay made a very well shaken martini just like my husband loves. The wine selection is great. The bar and lounge area are super inviting. The restaurant is sleek and elegant in design. The manager Umberto is the best. He brings hospitality to another level. We loved our server Lilah she was attentive and anticipated our every need. My husband started off with the Brentwood farm sweet corn soup and he loved every drop. I had the braised bacon and heirloom tomato salad then duck for my husband and tuna for me along with a braised short rib. For dessert we ordered both the chocolate and melon. We left the restaurant feeling full, satisfied and ready to return another time!

My husband and I were frequent diners of Market, specifically the bar because we really enjoyed the relaxed, casual vibe and delicious sushi. We would go there probably 2 to 3 times a month.
We always left saying that was absolutely delicious and the service was top-notch.

Our most recent outing this past Saturday, I would say everything was completely different. The hostess greeted us as usual with their kind and friendly demeanor, and sat us down at our table. We noticed that the table was so dark while there was a very dimly light candle but none of us could see anything so we were all shining our phone flashlights to view the menu, especially the sushi menu that you could barely read. It took about 5 to 10 minutes for someone to come over to us and my husband asked if they had a specific type of wine which was reasonable because we usually write bottles of wine down that we enjoy and he said no we don’t have that. He looked away and said he would come back and take our order.

My husband noticed rather quickly that they did in fact have that bottle, but that’s OK, no big deal. We carried on with our flashlights looking at the menu. We then very quickly realized that all of the prices have gone up, I mean way up. Not just a dollar or two I’m talking a sushi roll that I believe used to be $27 is now $35 for one roll. A salad was $35. We continued on because as I said before we love this restaurant and we love their sushi and we love their service. Three out of the four of us wanted sushi, but all of their rolls were not only $35 but also had zero descriptions on them. They just gave it a title like the Solana, market, but now we are all wondering because we don’t clearly remember what is in each of the rolls. We told my parents who were visiting from out of town that they recently switched ownership and very quickly we could tell.

We did not see the owners walking around and did not see a Manager walking around either. We also saw friends at the bar who then came over to see us and they could also not believe the gigantic hike and prices and mentioned it to us immediately. They even mentioned they both got a side salad and it cost $62 for two side salads.

We continued on and waited for the waiter to come over to take our order but we obviously had several questions about the rolls because there was no description on the menu. We waited. Five minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, and then 20 minutes. We’d then decided for these prices and no one coming over to help us, It was not worth it. I got up and wanted to speak to the manager because as a business owner myself, it is always good to know how people can improve and how the restaurant and service can improve.

I told the new manager exactly what happened and his words were, “I’m sorry”. He didn’t say anything else, he didn’t take care of us, he didn’t ask us to please be seated and he would bring our drinks right over, nothing. He only said sorry and let our party walk out. He did nothing to try and save us. He didn’t wonder what was going on or ask any deeper questions. He looked dumbfounded.

Let’s just say this was one of the most disappointing experiences we’ve ever had at this restaurant with awful service or barely any service I should say. I really hope the ownership gets a handle of what is going on because we would like to come back and give it another shot, but we were just simply shocked at the lack of service and large price increase. The main dining room at this point offers the three course meal prefix menu for 109 which you can now get at the bar.

I am not sure if that price went up or not, but perhaps they are putting too much care and love into the main dining room and forgetting the bar area, which on a Saturday night had one server. I really hope they can learn from this and bring market back to where it was before with already higher prices which people did not mind paying, but the service matched the price. On this night, it was a disaster at least for us.

I came here for my husband’s birthday dinner and was completely wowed. It was one of the best meals we have had in the past year. I am not a huge prix fixe menu person because there is a lot I do not/cannot eat but there was so much to choose from with each course. Every single course was delicious. The portions I thought were quite large. My highlight was actually the dessert. I never ever order dessert. I just don’t have a big sweet tooth but, The Rhubarb Sundae. I am still thinking about it.

Overall, a wonderful dining experience with a phenomenal three-course meal (starter, entree, dessert). Between those and the added small plate and warmed bread, you will leave plenty full.

Only con during the dinner was: We went for a birthday celebration and they gave us a sealed birthday card. While that’s a nice gesture, we realized later it had the wrong name written (we thought it was humourous but hope whatever other table they mixed it with felt the same way).

Tip about parking (and a ding against the service): There is a mandatory $6 or $7 valet parking if you park on the premise. It’s not about the cost but the principle. Feel free to drive down the next street to De La Valle Pl where there is free parking available.

Since the new owners have taken over, the price Has increased quite a bit. I was a regular at market restaurant for years, but the increase in price makes The experience overpriced. I loved the previous owners and felt that they presented amazing Cuisine for a fair price. And the employees were amazing. I hope the new owners know they have big shoes to fill and raising the Prices is not a good way to start.
