I ordered a custom cake for my wife’s 40th birthday. It was a pretty simple idea, and from the photos on their website, it seemed like I was going to get a beautiful cake. All I wanted was a black cake with a nice shiny green pentagram on top. An employee was very nice and texted me a picture of something that looked exactly like the idea I had. When I picked up this 110$ cake, I received something that looked like a kid made it. I didn’t want to cause a scene even though I was furious, so I took the cake and ended up using it. Every single person I showed it to told me I really should say something. Very disappointed. It didn’t even look like they tried to make it look nice.

The indoor decorations are neat. The bakery is good. There many choices for coffee and bakery. We ordered a caramel macchiato and a pumpkin spice. The caramel macchiato tasted good but the pumpkin spice tasted overly spiced with light coffee.
The ladies at the registers provided great service with plenty of seats to sit indoor or outdoor.
There are plenty of parking spots.

It was my first time coming in. It was the most awkward transaction of my life lol. Me & my sister were standing there for a good 15 minutes until my sister asked the guy working if he could please get someone. Rolls his eyes at us and muffled something under his breath/mask; proceeded to “wash” his hands . Because all he did was a quick rinse it was so gross. And then finally a girl comes up & that’s when the AWKWARDNESS truly began.
I told her I’m not familiar/ my first time here. She just kept going all over the place explaining to me after the fact and making me feel stupid about it. This is why chains are winning, it’s sad.
Your poor services/staff. Suck and are killing your business. Never will be coming back. I’ll enjoy a coffee at home. Oh and she didn’t even close the lid. It spilled all over my sister. Done.

This is a hard review to write. Village Baking company was a special place for me as a child, and was my first job in highschool. For decades had the highest quality pastries and was instrumental in starting me off on my journey of baking, pastry and food in general..

Service: 5/5
Food quality: 2/5
Price: a little on the high side for what we got

Josephine was very kind and helpful, and patient as we slowly made our selections.

The food items we ordered were:

Apple Tart: 5/5 — this was good, nicely textured tart shell, thinly sliced apples and flavor was great.

Apricot Pocket and Raspberry Pocket: 5/5 — Both were fresh, light flakey pastry and the just right amount of fruit filling.

Blueberry Muffin: 5/5 — fresh, moist inside of the muffin, nice crisp/crumbly streusel topping.

Chocolate Chip Muffin: 4/5 — yummy, semisweet chocolate chips and nice texture. A bit more dry than the blueberry.

Cranberry Pecan Scone: 3/5 — lovely fresh scone – although I had ordered an almond scone and had been looking forward to an almond scone for months! I didn’t check the box until I got home and noticed it was the wrong flavor. The cranberry pecan scone was fresh, moist yet crumbly and the classic scone texture. It was good, just not what I had ordered.

Almond Bear Claw: 1/5 — this was a disappointment. The bear claw has no glaze on the outside of the pastry leaving it dry and not quit sweet enough. I cut into the pastry to see how the filling was. The almond paste inside the pastry was thick, and I was so excited to see that! However it was maybe only 20% pure almond paste and the rest was some kind of filler that was not almond paste. The almond flavor was almost non existent. The actual pastry dough was average quality. Similar to Panera or any other chain bakery.

What a gem in Modesto’s McHenry Village. We come here for brunch. Their assortment of quiche is wonderful, and delicious, as is the coffee and tea. Josie, behind the counter listens. She is always pleasant and patience with each customer. Josie helped to make our experience at the Village Bakery a pleasant one.

I was excited to find a café with vegan options, but the quality was really poor. The cupcake was hard and tasted stale, and the cappuccino was basically just plain coffee. Very disappointing—won’t return.

Everyone who lives in Modesto very long finds this place. It’s an institution.
Meet your friends for a fabulous pastry or sandwich and a cup of coffee or cocoa.
Definitely a high quality chef in the kitchen.

Dragged my son over there just so we can stare at each other for 23 minutes until I finally caught someone’s attention and someone finally asked oh are you waiting for something? Actually yes, my sandwich that I ordered 25 minutes ago. They started making it after I said something but no..that just put a bad taste in my mouth. I ordered 20 dollars worth of cupcakes too and would’ve cancelled those if I could’ve. Maria the manager was nice but wasn’t helpful just kept apologizing. Like okay for it you’re sorry you cheated my order and let me sit there watching everyone else eat while I wait. Been coming here since I was a kid and that’s never happened. Last time they forgot my mother in laws coffee and we almost walked out without it. Guess it’s just kinda going downhill and they’re trying to make their money however they can. By “forgetting” things for the customer. I give one star on the food cuz I didn’t eat any of it.
