If you’re in Fresno, CA, and craving some delicious Japanese cuisine, look no further than Kikku Japanese Food in Downtown. I recently had the pleasure of dining there, and I can confidently say it was an exceptional experience.

The highlight of my meal was their famous #19 Spicy Crispy Chicken. This dish is an absolute must-try! The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside while remaining tender and juicy on the inside. The spice level could have been a little more spicy besides that it was just right, adding a delightful pinch, without overwhelming the palate. Each bite was a harmonious blend of flavors, and the portion size was generous, ensuring you get your fill.

Another standout dish was their side order of #48 Vegetable Tempura. The assortment of vegetables was fresh and perfectly cooked, encased in a light, crispy batter that was neither too oily nor too heavy. Each piece was a bite of perfection, with the natural flavors of the vegetables shining through. It was a fantastic complement to the spicy crispy chicken and added a nice balance to the meal.

The staff at Kikku Japanese Food deserve special mention. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. The service was prompt and attentive, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu and were happy to provide recommendations and answer any questions. Their friendly demeanor and professionalism truly set the tone for a memorable visit.

From the delicious #19 Spicy Crispy Chicken and the perfectly cooked #48 Vegetable Tempura to the outstanding service, Kikku Japanese Food exceeded my expectations. Whether you’re a local or just passing through Downtown Fresno, make sure to stop by and indulge in their fantastic offerings. You won’t be disappointed!

Update 11/14/24: Had the #3 downtown spicy chicken, which has the spice I loved. Also, with a 3-piece side of zucchini.

Can’t forget about those eyes either! Thanks for the recommendation.

Great food and consistent quality every time. My go-to order is the #8 Downtown Spicy Chicken — full of flavor and always cooked right. Service is solid and the downtown location is convenient. Definitely one of my favorite spots for Japanese food.

Do I love the owner? No.
Do I love the food? Unfortunately… yes.

I have beef with the owner because of a stupid coupon incident a few years ago where she treated me and my husband like criminals because we brought in a coupon so we didn’t go back for over a year. I still hate you if you read this, but your food is amazing. Renovate this location and the sauce should be free at this point with those prices.

Today 12-29-25 my son and I went in about 6:05 pm close to closing. Not very attentive no one acknowledged us. Disappointing to say the least. Food was good. We were done and leaving and I slipped going to the counter. No caution, signs of a wet floor. The gal behind the counter yelled did you forget to put out the wet signs again Crystal I didn’t see no accountability not even an apology how disappointing. Disgusting customer service.

I’ve been coming to this restaurant since 2017/18. I love their spicy chicken plate. I mix their sauce with their hot oil, and pour it over their white rice. I dip their chicken with the same mix. Delicious!!!! The staff is very attentive while dinning in, they work so hard. Definitely a must go if you’re in downtown Fresno area!! I try to pick up a plate every time I’m around for lunch.

First and last time for me. Sloppy unagi roll, with just a sliver of unagi in the middle. Not worth the price I paid, wasn’t during a rush, so I dont know why the roll looked the way it did.

Lovely staff. Very friendly. Ordered the Spicy Crispy chicken, the Downtown spicy chicken and tempura appetizer. Everything was delicious. I would definitely go here again and recommend for a quick bite. The decor was chill, lots of seating, and very clean restaurant. I hear it gets busy during lunchtime thought. I was here for dinner and it was fairly busy but food came out quick steaming hot. Definitely give it a try.

Kikku Japanese features traditional Japanese and fusion dishes; e.g., spicy chicken. I ordered #2 Teriyaki Tri-Tip Beef and Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura. Both were served with salad and sticky rice. Both were large portions and tasty. I arrived about 11 on a weekday. It appeared that most were regular customers and ordered ahead. Those that ordered ahead received their food first. I did not order ahead, and as I stood there waiting and watching others walk in and out with their lunch, I began to be a little concerned that my order was overlooked. I was glad when the owner or manager stopped by to let me know that my order would be out shortly. I really appreciate that. She also thanked me for my business and said she hoped to see me again.

No frills, bang-for-your-buck Japanese food in downtown Fresno. Friendly staff and quick service. Plenty of seating, plates came almost cafeteria/counter style. Poke was very over-sauced (wished the fish was highlighted more, seemed to be decent quality but couldn’t really tell with the sauce). Noodles and gyoza tasted fresh with hearty flavor. Easy metered parking nearby, though it can get busy during peak hours. Good option for an easy and filling meal.

Kikku’s spicy chicken and rice plate jumped from $8.90 (still printed on their old menu images) to $15.50. The plate itself hasn’t changed — just a small cup of panko chicken and a cup of rice — but the price sure has. Even with rising food costs, that dish probably runs them around $6 to make today, meaning they’re clearing $8–$9 profit per plate, more than double what they used to. Meanwhile, other similar local spots have managed to keep their prices reasonable and even expand, making Kikku’s hike feel even more absurd. I wish I could justify going back, but at either location it’s hard to pay that much for what you get.
